This was a film that was picked at random by my mum and I in Blockbuster while on holiday at my parents house as we couldn't see any big name blockbusters that we all hadn't seen before. We're all fans of Sean Bean and therefore this seemed like the best of the choices that were left. The film also stars former Home and Away actor Chris Hemsworth, and fairly unknown actress Victoria Profeta as his wife. I was slightly worried by the trailers at the start of the film as they all looked like low budget films and it made me think this might be one too.. and I was right!
When it begins, I thought it was going to be awful. The credit things at the start looked cheap and like they'd been done in Powerpoint, the soundtrack was pretty dire and the car chase scenes felt low budget too. However, encouraged by my family I perservered with it, and I am really glad I did because by the end, I think it was a really funny, quirky film that won't get the exposure it deserves just because it's not made by a big Hollywood studio.
As ever, Sean Bean is really fantastic as the very peculiar Pyke, and what I love most is that he's kept that fantastic northern accent of it which just adds to the eccentricity of his character. He acts to perfection, cool and calm for the most part then when he has to switch to a raving lunatic, its quite scary to watch because he switches so well. He is captivating to watch, and it's nice to see him in a more low budget movie - take away all the expensive special effects, and it is where you can really see actors like Bean show their mettle!
Chris Hemsworth, probably best known in the UK for his role as Kim Hyde in Aussie soap Home and Away does a pretty job in a major film role. He has to put on an American accent for the role, but I did notice his Aussie twang come thorough quite a bit, although it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the film at all. The end half was definitely better for him, he seemed to get into the swing of it, and I felt he especially did great on-screen with Sean Bean. The only weak link for me is Victoria Profeta. Her acting is quite wooden and almost embarrassing, but her character is very good so it's difficult to hate her. She seems over the top throughout the film, but again nearer the end she does seem to improve.
The setting of the movie is great. It goes right into the residential areas of the American town in which its set and shows the less shiny side of America you usually see in these films. Because of the low budget feel, it feels more realistic, and you can see why the Phelans' chose to spend the money even though you are willing them not because it's just stupid! The violence in the movie isn't too graphic but you are left in no doubt about what happens. The language is strong throughout but because of the nature of the movie, it's within context and not unnecessary.
If you fancy something a bit different, then do try watching Cash. It's quirky, it's different but best of all it really is enjoyable. Sean Bean is of course the best thing about the whole film, his performance is great to watch and we all agreed he made the movie as good as it was. The supporting cast members are good, but they show up the difference in calibre between them all. We were often laughing, sometimes shocked but always watching - can't do better than that! Definitely recommended.
