"The Casebook" is a collection of the last dozen Sherlock Holmes stories that Conan Doyle wrote, all in the 1920s, the last nearly 40 years after the introduction of the great consulting detective and his right-hand man and chronicler Dr Watson in the late 1880s.

All twelve were published first in a number of magazines, and some illustrations from these are reproduced in this excellently formatted Kindle edition. As always, I find that the illustrations enrich the reading experience.

I am glad that public pressure led Conan Doyle to bring back Holmes after apparently killing him off. If that hadn't happened we'd have had about two dozen fewer of the absorbing and dramatic investigations with their compelling plots and the often quirky brilliance of Holmes' reasoning and forensic skills. Great reading!

The Sherlock Holmes stories have had an impact that has lasted through the 20th century into the 21st. Many authors have written their own Sherlock Holmes stories, as well as adaptations for radio, television and film. But nobody has ever quite matched Conan Doyle's originals.

The Casebook contains the last adventures of Holmes and Watson, reprised by Conan Doyle due to massive popular demand. I found much to enjoy, particularly the stories narrated by Holmes himself. There's a short preface by Conan Doyle, and original period illustrations. The stories are dark and inventive as ever. My favourite was The Adventure of the Blanched Soldier, which I consider to be one of the best Holmes stories in any collection.

Well worth reading!
