Product Description

Product Description

With over 90,000 copies sold of the previous editions the new Third Edition of the best-selling Case Study Research has been carefully revised, updated, and expanded while retaining virtually all of the features and coverage of the second edition. Robert Yin's comprehensive presentation covers all aspects of the case study method - from problem definition, design, and data collection, to data analysis and composition and reporting. Yin also traces the uses and importance of case studies to a wide range of disciplines, from sociology, psychology and history to management, planning, social work, and education.

New to the Third Edition are: additional examples of case study research; discussions of developments in related methods, including randomized field trials and computer-assisted coding techniques; added coverage of the strengths of multiple-case studies, case study screening, and the case study as a part of larger multi-method studies, and five major analytic techniques, including the use of logic models to guide analysis. This edition also includes references to examples of actual case studies in the companion volume Applications of Case Study Research, Second Edition (Sage, 2003).

About the Author

Robert K. Yin is President of COSMOS Corporation, an applied research and social science firm. Over the years, COSMOS has successfully completed hundreds of projects for federal agencies, state and local agencies, and private foundations, and most of this book’s applications come from these projects.

Outside of COSMOS, Dr. Yin has assisted numerous other research groups, helping to train their field teams or to design research studies. A recent engagement has been with the United Nations Development Programme, and another assignment has been to provide guidance to assist doctoral students at the University of Copenhagen. Currently, Dr. Yin holds the position of distinguished scholar-in-residence at American University’s School of International Service (Washington, DC). Earlier, he served as Visiting Scholar at the U.S. Government Accountability Office’s research methodology division.

Dr. Yin has authored nearly 100 journal articles and books. His first book on the case study method, Case Study Research: Design and Methods (2009) is in its fourth edition. He has edited two case study anthologies (Yin, 2004; and 2005) and has most recently authored a new text on qualitative research methods (Yin, 2011). Yin points out that the case study is too often seen as a "soft option". In fact it requires a broad range of skills which must be used within a structured approach.

This book takes the reader through the key stages of: deciding if the case study approach is appropriate for your research, how to design a case study, how to collect and analyse evidence, and how to compose a Case Study Report.

Written in a clear style with plenty of examples and exercises, this book guides you through the processes involved. Yin provides a rigorous approach which should help the reader counter criticisms of the case study as a methodology which is often seen as inferior to more "scientific" approaches.

Yin provides an essential baseline for the active researcher using the case study method.
If you are involved in researching live projects then this work is invalauble. Yin's background in case studies of political, social and economic projects of the 1980s still proves useful in the 21st century.
It is not often that one comes across methodological works that are so accessible, informative and directive.
This work can also act as a practical fieldwork guide as it methodiccally takes you through each step of the process.
Well written with many poignant examples, it is a book I go back to, again and again, thinking...
"Mmmm...I wonder what Yin said about that!".
