Having discovered the Spiritual Crisis Network thru my Psychotherapist, i soon became aware of this book. It opened doors like never before and made me realise i wasn't 'insane' after all. It was utterly vital in my personal navigation thru my own spiritual crisis. It includes important details on how to deal with such an event, and with the knowledge that i was not alone in my inner turmoil, brought about great re-assurance. The most important aspect that i learned from this book is that it is the death of the 'ego' that one experiences in such crises and not literally yourself. This was the cataylst to my recovery. Please read this book with care, as it can be quite disturbing if you are in the throws of spiritual crisis yourself, although it definately saved me from many more years of psychriatric care. This book may be your life saver. Further reading would be The Stormy Self. Buy it !

I can thoroughly recommend this Book to anyone who wishes to understand the difficulties involved in coming to terms with an increased level of awareness which may make you feel slightly lost until you give up the control of the personality and the ego and allow the Universe in it's infinite wisdom to work ... through you!
And how to give up trying to control this process with the "small you" Amazing Book!

Awakening can be acutely uncomfortable. But being buffeted by life events after a shock also makes me more alive and open, more creative, more self-aware than I have been at any other time in my life. I hope I have gained some gift, some new practice through surviving this experience but while it's fashionable to say `I'm on a journey', I'm not so sure. `My life is a series of unconnected events,' may be truer for me than `the universe is guiding me to a deeper self-knowledge.' To some, this kind of eclectic spirituality: a belief in a caring universe is a melodramatic hope which might lull us into a smug, pious sleep.
It's comforting to think that the human race is evolving towards some new opening in spiritual development but the evidence of cruelty and inequity suggests otherwise. Natural selection is favouring the brave, the outrageous and sadistic as much as the pious, self-denying and compassionate. Story telling celebrates a glorious cycle of renewal and recovery but it is stretching credulity to apply narrative structure to the whole human race or just one life.
No one would choose to be rejected in love, for instance, but rejection is the risk we take in committing ourselves to people; that's how we discover real friends. We need people; even a hermit needs help to find the herb tea at Tesco's. Seeking feels more natural to me than finding; to say `the reason I'm angry is almost certainly not the reason I think,' comes more easily to me than: `I've found the answer.' While many people attribute their recovery from dismay to medication, meditation, counselling or a change in diet, isn't the real truth that having a job I love and a partner I love is more empowering? Aren't we deceiving ourselves if we think that anything else can substitute for a meaningful relationship?

A Useful Tool 1 Mar. 2012
By family guy - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
In Case of Spiritual Emergency is a very powerful tool for understanding mental crisis from a higher perspective as a potential avenue for spiritual breakthrough. It details tremendous stories both contemporary and from history about how even the very best of us are tried and tempered by the fires of our own inner darkness in our lives and how we can emerge all the better for the experience on the other side if only we can have the understanding, patience and safety needed to get through it.

In an age when we over medicate every problem, it is nice to know that there are responsible people like this author that are able to provide a uniquely compassionate and very useful perspective on the process of spiritual emergency and awakening.

I highly recommend this book.

an important text 10 Mar. 2012
By new england journeyman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is really an all-encompassing commentary on a subject that is becoming more and more important to our world. Lucas weaves personal experience with practical advice on surviving a brush with the numinous. She also brings many important historical elements to the table, from both the modern and ancient worlds, and Eastern and Western traditions. She is succinct and to the point. I can't wait for her next work!

Wonderful and very Updated! 16 Sept. 2012

This is a very good book. Easy reading and very updated to our days. If you have ever read about Spiritual Emergence/Emergency before, the most known book might have been from Stanislav Grof written almost 20 years ago, a very difficult reading much more for "professionals" than for those going through a spiritual emergence. I felt very great to see that many of the symptoms I've gonne through were really because of the emergence in itself. It really worth the reading besides the fact of being an easy and pleasurable one.

Great INTRO for people needing to learn about spiritual emergencies. Simple and good way to begin. I'd recommend Spiritual Emergency by Grof for a deeper understanding. I did order two of these: one for me and one to lend to people.

a helpful and informative book that recognizes that a psychotic break isn't necessarily a mental illness but a process of spiritual awakening that is out of this world..
