Product Description

Product Description
It is a routine case for John Royle - until a body turns up in the Road Hole Bunker at the 17th on the Old Course at St Andrews. Soon he's up to his ears in bodies and red herrings as the trail takes him through the social strata of town and gown, and the case grows to encompass the history, and the very future, of the old course itself.

4.0 out of 5 stars At Last A Scottish Detective to rival Rebus, 24 May 2008
Meet John Royle PI, the creation of talented Scottish writer William Meikle. A curious concotion best described as a hard drinking Walter Mitty meets Micky Spillane.

Meikle turns back the clock to when detectives were detectives, where many a clue was turned over in a bar, when the answer to a nagging question became crystal clear through the mist of an alcoholic haze during the hangover from hell. Meikle pens a book that works, Meikle expertly walks the reader through the town of St Andrews, its famous pubs and to the most famous golf course in the world, he introduces us to a diverse range of individuals that appear so real they simply must be based on certain characters in the famous town of St Andrews itself.

He leads us up the fairway to the 'road hole' where a brash loud mouthed American is found murdered, his body dumped in the bunker. And John Royle sets out to solve the mystery. This book is old fashioned writing at its best and Meikle skilfully weaves the yarn in a book which could quite easily reach cult status. Every golfer who has ever played the 'Old Course' will want to read it, every fan who has simply watched the historical highlights from the 'road hole' on TV will want the book in their collection.

My only regret in reading the book is that I wasn't sitting in a quiet corner of the bar at the Old Course hotel itself with a wee dram after playing the course in regulation. The pretty barmaid would disturb me now and again but only to replenish my glass ... and wait, was that a cheeky twinkle in her eye ? ... now that's fantasy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Evocative descriptions of back-street, Scottish public houses, 14 Sep 2008
By R. Murray "Richie Murray" (Glasgow, Scotland) - See all my reviews
Very enjoyable mystery/detective story of the 'whodunnit' variety. The start is a little surprising as it seems like a scene from a Bogart detective film has been transported to the East coast of Scotland. However, once the tale is underway the author successfully retains the reader's attention until the ending. Using St. Andrews as the backdrop for the story works well as Meikle's descriptions of the people and places within this old university town are highly evocative. Particularly strong are the descriptions of the pubs/drinking dens and the drinkers who frequent them.
