Product Description

Product Description

Written by the author of "Jurassic Park", this medical thriller won the USA's Edgar Award for Best Crime Novel. Was it murder, or horribly botched surgery, or was someone in the great Boston medical centre violating the Hippocratic oath? One doctor is willing to seek out the truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly excellent!, 14 Aug 2000
By A Customer
I simply couldn't put this book down. I sat up until 4am, unable to rest until I discovered the answer to the puzzle of who performed that operation! It was a fascinating book, which provided real insight into American medicine in the 1960's. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in medicine.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Gripping Book, 27 Jul 2003

Even though I know next-to-nothing about medicine, I still found this book nearly impossible to put down. It has all the elements off a good murder mystery, and is Michael Crighton at his best.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor characterisation led to a confusing story, 15 Feb 2007
I had to struggle through this novel. It is an early oeuvre and it shows. In the introduction Crichton virtually apologises for the novel. He explains he "didn't agonize over whether I was expressing myself; I didn't worry about art' I was writing under a pseudonym, at very high speed". The subject matter was all there as usual, it was the characterisation that was missing. This is a 400 page book that should be 600 pages. I didn't feel anything for any of the characters - I couldn't empathise with them because they were just names. I couldn't even remember who was who because they were that unmemorable! Not really worth seeking out.
