Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk

Any television drama that gives Jason Isaacs a lead role instantly warrants some kind of attention. And with Case Histories, there’s more than just the leading man to warrant the attention. While on the surface, it might look like just another detective series, there are a couple of choices that make it just a little bit more intriguing.

The main focus of Case Histories is less on the procedural of solving a case, and more on the characters. Stories are split into two episodes apiece, and are based on the popular series of novels by Kate Atkinson.

There’s a lot to enjoy here, in a welcome and mature piece of television drama, but Case Histories isn’t a perfect beast. There are concessions made for the small screen that aren’t going to please fans of the books, and a high degree of belief suspension is required to get the most from it. Yet the presence of the perfectly-cast Isaacs is ample compensation for all of this. His performance is magnetic, powering the show forward even through its quieter moments.

This is, in short, quality drama, well executed and very well played. More Case Histories would be very much appreciated… --Jon Foster

Product Description

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital Stereo ), English ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: 2-DVD Set, Behind the scenes, Cast/Crew Interview(s), Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: Case Histories is a character driven, not procedural, detective series. Each story is, first and foremost, an exploration and revelation of character structured by the unravelling of a crime mystery. Distinctive in its humanity and modernity, its storytelling embodies emotional depth and humour. Each two part story reflects the novel from which it is adapted, yet clearly belongs to a returnable series. The series has the ambition of the best jigsaw puzzles of Kate Atkinson's novels, aiming to delight both her established audience and a mainstream TV audience with her immensely likeable and original characters. At the heart of these stories and characters is private investigator, Jackson Brodie played by Jason Isaacs. It all adds up to a clever, compelling drama, with warmth and wit from Jackson, alongside the mystery and murder of the dark world outside. ...Case Histories - Season 1 - 2-DVD Set ( Case Histories ) ( Case Histories - Season One )

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent (but haven't read the books) 11 July 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Was drawn into watching this unenthusiasticly by my wife, a great fan of the books. Very glad that I followed her guidance as I thought this was a fantastic series - plots are quite clever but what really makes the show is the charisma of all the actors and the brilliant characterisation. Add some very emotional moments - both funny and touching - and the result is a real winner. My only hope is that Mr Issacs can be drawn back from his new US venture to make a 2nd series. (And hello to Jason Issacs obviously....)

4.0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Treat 17 Jun 2011
By P. G. Strachan VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
I'm a huge fan of Kate Atkinson's books and while I'd been looking forward to seeing them translated onto the telly there's always that sense of dread...that feeling that they're going to trash something truly great. I may be jumping the gun a bit (as I type we're only four episodes in) but so far it's been an absolute pleasure. Alright they play fast and loose on the location front shifting everything to Edinburgh (which looks great by the way) but otherwise they seem to have managed to strike exactly that balance that Atkinson has in her books between the deathly serious and the seriously funny. Plaudits to the actors involved....Jason Isaacs inhabits Jackson Brodie...and a special mention to the wee girl who plays his daughter - Marlee - what a little toot....

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Series that lives up to the books! 25 Jun 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had read all of Kate Atkinson's superb "Jackson Brodie" series of books (all four - although only the first three are serialised here) and was extremely impressed with the series which was finely acted by the likes of Jason Isaacs and Amanda Abbington and beautifully filmed in Edinburgh. These are not traditional murder mysteries however and have a lot more depth and character exposition than the usual tv fare. Anyone who loves Atkinson's densely plotted fiction will perhaps argue that the plots have been somewhat simplified for the television adaptations but it was great to see the characters that I had loved from the books "come alive" on the screen. Isaacs portrays the world-weary detective Jackson Brodie perfectly and I would defy any woman not to fall a little bit in love with him! The supporting cast are all brilliant - of special note is Phil Davies in the first film, heartbreaking as the father of a murdered girl. The mix of quite appalling violence and murder with wry humour may not be to everyone's taste but the balance was perfect here - hope KA writes some more books so that we can have Series 2!
