10 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Mr. A. L. Attwood on 18 July 2006
Format: Audio CD
Great story, wonderful reading, loved every bit until at the end of CD 4, right in the midst of a great adventure, the voiceover says "end of CD4" and you are left with no idea at all what on earth happens.

It is like buying a book with half the pages torn out. What on earth are the publishers playing at? I don't mind that the story stops, but somehow the voice should say, or the sleeve notes should say... "to be continued on Casanova the London Years or whatever it is." They actually do this, oddly, earlier on, where a CD ends mid-adventure, and you get the message that you have to wait a moment to see what happens next.

This looks like a plain simple cock-up, and really the publishers should be apologising, recalling all stock and offering replacements to anyone left high and dry.

Great story, utterly wrecked by stupid publishing.

Beautiful voice + voluptuous prose = heaven 17 Aug. 2012

This is narrated beautifully and skillfully by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his rich, deep voice is a perfect marriage with the content. My commute has never been so thrilling!

Meltingly lovely 13 Feb. 2013

I love Benedict Cumberbatch's voice. I'm not the biggest fan of audio books, and since I knew I'd likely only listen in my car, I thought I'd give this a try. I was delighted...the prose is old and classic, and when married to the voice of the velvet Sherlock actor, it is just a wonderful jump into another world long forgotten. The storytelling is very foreign; we don't write like this today. Still, it's a beautiful reminder of a simpler time, read by a most talented man.

UPDATE: I JUST FINISHED THE FOUR CDS...and it feels like the story is not over. I feel really let down! Is there more? Why does it end there?
Worth a Listen 14 April 2014

I'll be completely honest: the reason I'm giving this five stars is because Benedict Cumberbatch is a fabulous narrator! The story wasn't terrible and there were moments of humor that I enjoyed but overall I wasn't blown away by it. However, it is worth listening to just to hear Benedict read. His voice is truly lovely and expressive, conveying emotion flawlessly, from wistfulness to outrage and everything in between. He has managed to take somewhat mediocre material and make it fascinating. Mr. Cumberbatch is a very talented man and that certainly shines through here. If you're a Cumberbabe, be sure to check this out!
Great Audiobook Benedict Cumberbatch Reads! 10 Oct. 2013
By Cat Mayo - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
This is a kind of long audiobook story, it really is just a reading of Casanova's journals, BUT it is read by Benedict Cumberbatch. I know all you Sherlock fans and Star Trek fans who have seen him are undoubtedly drooling right about now, and rightfully so. He is wonderful reading this, it does have a handful of risque bits, but it's so soothing in tone since it is just his reading basically a diary. (Technically, it's a memoir.) Well, I was completely satisfied by this, and I believe it would be worth it to hear not only the story, but Benedict's voice lulling you off to sleep. I'll leave the buying up to you.
