Product Description

A book of practical information and reference for all cartoonists. The author shows step-by-step how to build faces, bodies, expressions, movement, costume etc. He also describes techniques for freehand drawing, composition, perspective and caricature - with hundreds of useful drawings. Gags for single cartoons and strips are also discussed. Finally, there is helpful advice on presenting finished work and on getting it published. All in all, this is a complete reference guide for all cartoonists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good even for old hands..., 26 Nov 2003
I'd like to think I'm a fairly accomplished cartoonist, but still this book taught me a new way of drawing. As a result, my drawings have become less stilted, and I can draw them quicker.

For the beginner who wants to draw cartoons, but perhaps feels they have little talent, this book is a godsend. The 'Keyhole Ken' method that the author uses is one of the easiest, most adaptable methods I have seen in any book. I use it to a fairly large degree, and my drawings still look like my drawings, not merely clones of the author's work, as many 'how-to' cartoon books can induce.

Just buy it- whether for yourself, or someone else, no matter what their (or your) age is. Get drawing!

5.0 out of 5 stars This is probably the best book on the market. You need it., 11 Sep 2001

This book is excellent. You don't need ANY drawing ability to begin cartooning. Hall starts off by introducing a very simple method for drawing cartoon characters, then describes how to add individuality by the careful choice of clothing, movement and expression. There is no doubt that his approach works, and what's more he is honest too, and clearly states that practice is the key to good cartoon illustration. Hall adds to the excellent technical advice by including sections on layout, gag writing, and getting your work published. I think this book should be kept under wraps, it gives away nearly all of the trade secrets. If you only hide one book on cartooning, hide this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on cartooning I've ever read., 25 Oct 2001

This book gives an excellent step by step guide to drawing cartoons. It starts off from the very basics and takes the reader through all the steps needed to create credible gags and strips. I particularly liked the way the author teaches the "language"of cartoon imagery, giving a great many of examples; and how he provides several pages' worth of "gag situations", which can be copied and adapted ad infinitum. This is a very practical and down- to-earth workbook. It is easy to read and a joy to follow.
