As someone who has no training in art, but still wanted to do cartoons I learned a lot from this book. My teenage son also has successfully used it to draw cartoons for his school paper. We have also referred to it when making our own little cartoons instead of using stock clip art when we want to add a personal touch to newsletters etc.. We simply make a little drawing, and scan it in.

This is probably one of the best home teaching manuals available. Anyone with any desire to draw or just doodle will be amazed at how this seemingly "gifted" art can come to life at your own fingertips.

I am an illustrator/teacher and I've been using this book since 9th grade, I am now 27 years old and still use it. A fantastic source for cartoonists of any age.

A well-organized presentation of both sophisticated and basic cartooning concepts and techniques --- but don't just take my word for it: In a 1993 interview in Simpsons Illustrated, Matt Groening, creator of the Simpsons, said, "One of my main influences was Cartooning the Head and Figure, by Jack Hamm, which demonstrated on page 2 that you can evoke all sorts of emotions with the crudest little ink squiggles." High praise from a, by any measure, successful cartoonist.

I used to draw cartoons all the time as a child but gave up for twenty something years. Now as an adult I want to develop my skills properly.

I have trouble getting past the first few pages of this book because I end up wanting to pick up my graphics tablet or pen and paper and start trying out new ideas. It is a very inspiring book as the reader can see how even the most impressive cartoons can be drawn from their principle components. The author mixes up many different cartoon styles so that you can pick and choose according to your own ability and taste. I can imagine that even if I were to be an accomplished cartoonist then this book would be useful to for getting myself out of a rut. For example, want to draw eyes? There's 135 different eyes listed on page 4. 156 mouths on page 5.

Although the talent behind the cartoon is quite awesome, it is not intimidating because you can see how the cartoons were made. I wish I knew of this book when I was a child, I might not have given up.

The greatest thing about this book is the fact that it's suitable for both the expert and the beginner. With over 127 side view noses, 73 frontal view, 135 eyes, 46 brows, 156 mouths, 122 ears, 105 hairstyles, 33 hats, and MORE -- it's not only excellent for learning new styles, it's also a great 'source' book for ideas! Definitely a 'must have' if you're looking for fresh ideas or want to learn cartooning.
