Book Description

A rural tale of social intrigue set in the English countryside of the 1940s when farming formed the basis of village life.

A chance encounter in the 1970s catapults our heroine back to her youth in war-torn Britain. Set early in the Second World War, this is the story of how a young milliner, after losing her child in an air raid, stumbles from London and ends up in deepest rural England. Using her wits and ingenuity she battles with the authorities and some strong and stubborn characters in her quest to be truly independent both as a woman and as a farmer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good read. 17 Aug. 2013

I enjoyed this book very much. Very interesting to follow Jemima's journey through life. The book opens at the All England Agricultural Show, where she is presenting the awards for the prize winning cattle. Little does she know that in the next few moments her life is going to be shaken and she will have to look closely at her past.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good read! 28 Jan. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. There aren’t many novels set in the farming world of the early 20th century – the earthy fight for survival in rural England made an unusual and engaging backdrop for the charming story of Jemima and how she was to ultimately prove herself as competent a farmer as any man.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Carthors for Miss Crichton 30 Oct. 2013
By Jane
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this story and reading about how Miss Crichton straight from being a London nurse managed to take on and build up a successful dairy farm. However I found her solution for dealing with her inheritance a little bizarre - I am sure that there were many orphans in London during the Blitz, who could easily have solved all her problems for her.

A fascinating if somewhat improbable plot that kept me riveted to the last page. Intrigue and secrets set in daily routine of a farm. Great read.
