This is the 3rd of the Carte Noire Espresso capsules that I have tried. The packaging is the same throughout the range, the plastic pods are individually packaged in an air tight bag. A coffee smell is apparent as soon as one tears open this bag - as the top of the pods are not totally sealed. I had no problems in putting the pods in my machine, and the pressure required to (further) puncture the top is not noticeably different from Nespresso pods.
The taste is down to individual preferences, I tried a "3", "7" & "9" in parallel. The "3" tasted like a lighter roast coffee, and the mildest; the "7" was a higher roast and a bit more fuller flavoured. "9" was fuller still, and seemed more chracterful to me, fruity or even a touch of chocolate - bit not the overly high roast one sometimes encounters. So their labelling system does seem accurate. I personally prefered the "9" and would happily buy more of these. My wife has a particular Nespresso favourite, which none of the Carte Noire pods displaces - although she is very happy to have the occasional non Nespresso pod.

Okay, here's the deal! I was interested to finally be able to buy capsules not made by Nespresso now that the well-publicised court case ruled against Nespresso's monopoly and allowed competitors to market their own (cheaper) alternatives.

Ar 20p each, these capsules are a third cheaper. They fitted quite easily in my CitiZ machine, but I had more difficulty in my smaller, cheaper Magimix machine.

First of all, each Carte Noire capsule is separately wrapped in a fiddley plastic wrapper which is difficult to tear open and environmentally unfriendly in my opinion.

The coffee delivered by these capsules is fine I suppose; I purposefully bought the strong No 9 intensity version as I like coffee with a kick. There wasn't much of the resplendent crema you got with Nespresso, either!

The coffee itself was smooth and pleasant but tasted very like nice regular filter coffee - nothing like the intense espresso kick and pureness of the Nespresso capsules, which I have to admit taste significantly better in my opinion...

Darn it, back to those expensive Nespresso capsules I suppose...

My reviews of Carte Noire capsules are the same (as they function and perform the same), but differ in the review of taste.

These are individually wrapped plastic capsules that when opened release a burst of roast coffee aroma that floods the senses. Even my wife, who is not a coffee drinker commented on the alluring aroma.

I have some reservations over plastic capsules as some I have tried have failed to puncture correctly and this has led to weak coffee and wasted capsules. Pre-perforated plastic capsules have performed better, but these are not pre-perforated and are sealed, so I wasn't expecting them to work as well.

The capsules fit perfectly in my Nespresso machine and I set the coffee to lungo. I was pleasantly surprised when the coffee started to flow as if I had put in an aluminium capsule. The coffee amount seemed to be just right and there was little evidence of back feed of water where it had failed to push through the capsule. the real quantity test is that my super-size coffee mug takes 2 lungos and milk set to the latte mark in my Aerocchino. With Nespresso capsules this gives me a full mug of Latte. With the Carte Noire capsules the level was just short, which means they were performing as well as the aluminium Nespresso capsules. Flow test passed!

Of course the quantity is a moot point if the coffee doesn't taste right. I prefer dark and bold coffees with heavy earthy tastes. This isn't quite as strong as I would normally drink as it at the top of mid range in boldness. I am not saying that it is a bad thing as I appreciate that everybody has different preferences and I did like the coffee and the roasted flavours do come through in a Latte.

We are sampling new brands of Expresso coffee capsules as they become available as the original brand designed to fit Nespresso machines makes wonderful tasty coffees but each cup is a treat due to the price.

Firstly we found these Carte Noire capsules overly packaged, no need for the box and the individual foil wraps, (although there is a nice aroma of coffee as you tear into them) The packaging also means you cannot store them in the dedicated steel mini tower unit we have beside our Nespresso machine. However the capsules fit into the machine perfectly and they are soft enough for the machine to perforate them easily (unlike another brand we tried, that was so chunky, we were concerned we would break out machine as we struggling to clamp them down)  The flavour range is good and the coffee compares very well with the original brand. Due to the competitive price we will continue to use these even though our storage unit is redundant!

Take one star off because of the packaging.

There is no doubt about it - the 'Carte Noire' brand has that 'something special' look - slightly mysterious, perhaps?
It sounds the part, too, as the name rolls off the tongue.

The packs arrived safely in a large, plain coloured cardboard box, the top of which comes off to leave the 8 separate boxes on a strong cardboard 'tray', 38 cm x 23 cm x 4 cm, for storage (if required).

'Coffee Made Happy' is revealed, under the lid of each individual box, which is presented in the distinctive black & gold colouring, with a hint of cream.
Measuring roughly 15 cm x 10.25 cm x 9 cm, the box is a nice fit for my cupboard shelf.
Inside are 10 individually wrapped capsules.
I do not tend to worry too much about the amount of packaging in selecting my coffee. There are advantages & disadvantages to all on offer, but opening the wrapper of each 'Carte Noire' releases that fresh coffee aroma which proffers just a hint of what is to come - a well-balanced, flavoursome coffee with an excellent crema.
A coffee to savour; one to linger over, offering the perfect excuse to indulge in a square or two of the darkest chocolate to bring out that nonchalant 'hint of cocoa'.

The dark brown-coloured capsules with gold foil top require similar if not the same pressure as the Nespresso brand which is definitely a plus in terms of competitors (at the time of writing), although my ageing Magimix copes with all without complaint.

Has 'Carte Noire' pipped my current favourite?
Not quite! When a serious hit is required, it remains my first choice.
BUT, at more relaxing times...this has now become my choice.
