4.0 out of 5 stars A Timely Reminder 2 April 2013
By zuma76
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I wonder how many young men and women, on hearing Stephen Stills' '4 + 20' for the first time, decided they wanted to learn guitar and play that song. I certainly did and have spent the best part of the last 40 years listening to and trying (in vain) to emulate his playing. Following his career has brought enormous pleasure and - at times - dismay, but as this wonderfully well assembled and presented 4 CD box set proves, the man is an exceptional talent

It's been a while in the making, but Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein deserve enormous credit for compiling this expansive and well-packaged anthology. I have everything Stills has recorded with Buffalo Springfield, CSN, CSNY, Manassas, The Stills Young Band and solo and yet still get a massive sense of exhileration and wonderment when I listen to his music. The blend of folk, blues, county, rock and Latin continues to enthrall me, as does his guitar paying, both acoustic and electric. Listened to from the opening ' Travelin' on CD1 through to closing 'Ain't It Always' on CD4, I cannot help but be struck by the sheer range of style, lyrics, subject matter and arrangement. At times deeply and painfully personal (So Begins The Task, Do For The Others, Haven't We Lost Enough?), at times jubliant and swaggering (Suite;Judy Blue Eyes, Love The One Your With, Rock 'n Roll Crazies/Cuban Bluegrass),frequently political (Four Days Gone, Isn't It About Time,Find The Cost of Freedom), the set shows just how wide Stills can cast his net. There's so much variety of pace and mood in the selections here that it never drags or repeats itself - no matter how many times you may have heard the songs.

Quibbles? Inevitably and was it ever thus with these sort of projects. But in reality they are minor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great talent well served by this collection 6 April 2013
By J. H. Bretts VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is an exemplary and well-packaged four CD boxed set covering five decades of Steve Stills' work - over 80 tracks and five hours of music. Given the size and scope it takes time to explore and appreciate - but without doubt it brings home how brilliant Steve Stills has been in bringing together rock and roll, Latin music, folk and blues with thoughtful and moving lyrics in a way that is uniquely his. Highlights for me include a previously unreleased version of The Treasure (an extended version of which appeared on the first Manassas album),a blistering jam with Jimi Hendrix and the moving 4+20. There are also pristine remastered versions of great songs from Bluebird through to I Don't Get It. The accompanying booklet has excellent notes on each track though the essays are a touch sycophantic, brushing over the fact that Stills' career has not really fully developed in the manner of the prolific and adventurous Neil Young. And yet on the evidence of this set Stills has continued to produce great music over the years. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stephen Stills - Carry On (Box Set 4 CDs) 14 May 2013
Format:Audio CD
This box set begins with Stills earliest recording from about 1962 and its not a bad song, the Buffalo Springfield tracks have all been heard before and are on several compilations already. There are several solo Stills tracks on CD 1 that are brilliant, I enjoyed these tracks a lot. The CSN & Y tracks are all superb with a few surprises.
CD2 is my favorite with a more guitar and heavier feel on many of these tracks, some featuring Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. Some great wha wha from Stills on a few as well.
CD3 has Stills mid 1970s work including his band Manassas. Very little from the Stills/Young band indicating a lack of interest in this era. There is some great CSN tracks which I really enjoyed from the period in the late 1970s I knew little about.
The final CD has more recent Stills work some of those 1980s sessions had sounds that just don't work with the music. There is still some great music here and a few classic songs.
Overall this is a good box set with great sound and a good mix of songs I enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not so much of a Carry On 25 Mar 2013
Format:Audio CD
Much like the Crosby & Nash box sets this 4-cd collection shows a similar dip in quality levels from about 1975 or mid way through disc 3 here. But this box set highlights Stills stunning career from 1966-73 with tracks from The Buffalo Springfield, CSN, CSNY and the superb Manassas double from 1972. Whilst Crosby's had an extra cd of extras & unreleased tracks here we have about 20 of these most of which disappoint especially the much talked about Stills Hendrix collaboration of which we have barely 3 minutes. The real howler for me is that once again a box set has failed to supply the fans with the 9-minute 'Bluebird' missed off the Springfield box set not here. Maybe Graham Nash who compiled this box set thought we need to have some stuff from the 80s & 90s - no we don't. 5 stars for his songs with Buffalo Springfield, his stunning first 2 solo albums, CSN debut & the timeless Manassas record. A lavish booklet is also here, but it's strange that known as Captain Manyhands during the 60s Still has had little involvement in this box set. An essential purchase BUT if you haven't any of the above can I suggest you purchase these other records first.

There are some odd selections 'Dear Mr Fantasy' not written by Stills and was on the CSN 1990 box set - all very odd. I think Nash believes their 80s & 90s output is valid which must account for some of the weaker selections here. What we could do with is a Manassas expanded edition.

Disc 1 from his Springfield early songs to Carry On in 20 odd tracks - about 2-3 years shows an incredible development of his song writing skills - how many artists can show in such maturity in such a short space of time? Incredible. These days 'artists' take that long to make one record.
