This good value bumper pack comprises the first four movies in the popular Carry On canon (from 1957 to 1960). All four films are highly enjoyable, though (befitting the era) relatively gentle efforts in a series that in later years mutated into several forms, through historical parody, high camp, and finally seedy sex farce.
Carry On Sergeant sees William Hartnell (in his only Carry On appearance) training a hopeless bunch of National Servicemen (which includes another `one off' turn in the form of Bob Monkhouse). With its slight storyline and comparatively innocuous jokes and situations, the film doesn't really feel like a genuine Carry On outing, despite the debuting presence of (soon-to-be) regulars like Kenneth Williams (prototype arch snob), Charles Hawtrey (prototype mincing ninny), and Hattie Jacques (prototype old dragon). All were to expand their personas and give far funnier turns in later films; however, Kenneth Connor, another series regular, gives arguably his best Carry On performance as the hypochondriac in the bunch.
Carry On Nurse is more satisfying overall, with a broader sense of humour and a more satisfying and varied plot; here, Hawtrey shines brightest, as a more outrageously extroverted character than he essayed in the first film, whilst Shirley `Goldfinger' Eaton is absolutely gorgeous as the main `Nurse' of the title. Carry On Teacher, the third film in the series, is the highlight of this quartet and one of the genuine Carry On classics, with the team by now firing on all cylinders and coming up with some golden moments as a group of educators terrorised by the unruly kids in their charge; whilst Carry On Constable, though featuring the series debut of Sidney James, the great Leslie Phillips in full-on `wolf' mode, and Hawtrey at his most outrageously effeminate, is a slightly stodgier effort, chiefly undone by the amount of screen time dedicated to one of Connor's most annoying lovelorn dorks.
One of the most impressive features of this Carry On compendium (echoed throughout the others in this series of bumper packs) is the fact that all four DVDs feature commentaries with noted Carry On expert Robert Ross, alongside some of the surviving cast members from the films in question. Shirley Eaton and Terence Longdon reminisce on the making of Carry On Nurse, and they are joined by Dora Bryan for Carry On Sergeant; Leslie Phillips is his usual endearing self alongside Ross for Carry On Constable, whilst Carry On Teacher has Ross joined by (then) juvenile actors Richard O' Sullivan, Larry Dann, and Paul Cole.
