5.0 out of 5 stars Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in fer me!, 16 Nov 2003

This features probably some of the best gags in the whole Carry On series. It is also regarded as probably the best in the series and I won't argue with that. Kenneth Williams is superb as Julius Caesar, strutting around petulantly like Tony Blair in a hissy fit, constantly exclaiming that no one understands him. Joan Sims does what she does best, the ball-breaking wife, gobbling grapes in her bath-tub and bawling out Julius for being 4 years late coming home from his latest invasion. Charles Hawtrey as the dotty old soothsaying father, Sid James as a bawdy Mark Anthony, and Amanda Barrie looking lovely in a bath-cap as a ditzy Cleopatra. Warren Mitchell also puts in an enjoyable performance as the auctioneer at a slave market. This is great fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best. An essential purchase., 28 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Carry On Cleo [DVD] [1964] (DVD)
Number 10 in the series sees the team take advantage of the sets from Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's Cleopatra left at Pinewood Studios. Sidney James returns to the series after being absent for three films and plays Marc Antony to Kenneth Williams's Julius Caeser. Joan Sims also makes a welcome return after being absent for the last four films. Sims plays Wiliams's hard-faced wife, while her father is played by Charles Hawtrey. Kenneth Connor is another actor making a welcome return after an absence of three films - he and Jim Dale are British slaves who break free in an effort to return to their homeland. Meanwhile James is deciding how exactly he is going to dispose of Williams after he has fallen for Cleo (Amanda Barrie). The innuendos are flying around like never before in the series and after watching this, you'll never look at Burton and Taylor's film and keep a straight face ever again. After Carry On Cleo it's difficult to imagine exactly how they could top it. But thankfully they did! A couple of times! Look out for William's "Infamy" speech. A winner every time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Second Best In The Series, 17 May 2006
By Ian Phillips (Bolton, Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Carry On Cleo [DVD] [1964] (DVD)
Carry On Cleo is one of the series entries that will always be remembered. It simply is classic British comedy at it's best. When filming at Pinewood studios for the disastorous epic, Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor, was abandoned there, Peter rodgers and Gerald Thomas just could'nt resist the advantage of the lavish and spectacular sets, making it all look a lot more extravagent than most of the other Carry On's that were filmed on a shoe string budget. the cast are all on top form with Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar and Sid James as Mark Anthony, delivering the funniest lines. Also included in the cast are Amanda Barrie in the title role, Joan Sims, Jim Dale, Kenneth Connor as well as guest appearances from acclaimed classical actress, Sheila Hancock and Warren Mitchell from the classic sitcom, Till Death Do Us Part.
Hilarious from beginning to end and packed full of classic one liners ("infamy, infamy, they've all got in for me" cries Kenneth Williams as Julius Caesar as he is about to be killed). This is a absolutley essential Carry On and is a great one to induct somebody who has never heard of this long running and triumphantly succesful British comedy series.
