Book Description

Shelby Nichols is an average woman who is married to the only guy she ever fell for. Her life is organized and predictable, revolving around her husband and two children. All that changes the day she stops at the grocery store for some carrots. As the cashier rings up her purchases, a gunman is busy robbing the bank inside the store. When a customer grabs the robber's mask, he is shot and everyone runs for cover. Everyone except Shelby, who finds herself face to face with the killer. The next thing she knows, she's lying on the floor with a bullet wound to her head. Luckily, the bullet only grazes her scalp, and she doesn't suspect any lasting affects until later, when she suddenly 'hears' what people are thinking. With this uncanny ability, her life takes on a whole new dimension. Her kids think she's bossy and too old to understand them, but that's nothing compared to her husband. He says he loves her, but what is it about the redhead at work that he doesn't want her to know? As if that isn't enough, the gunman knows she can identify him, and he's out to silence her forever. In her fight to stay alive, she is saved from certain death by a handsome hit-man with ties to organized crime. This pulls Shelby even deeper into danger, where knowing someone's thoughts can not only hurt her feelings, but get her killed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun little farce 7 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The heroine gets caught in the middle of an armed robbery, sustains a head injury and finds that she can hear people's thoughts. Most worrying are the thoughts of her husband and his classy new work colleague. Before long she gets embroiled in a lot more than she bargained for, including working for a mobster whose bodyguard has more than a passing interest in her.

Fans of Liz Evans will love this - it's funny and silly without becoming ridiculous, and a hapless heroine who is not Superwoman but basically bluffs her way out of trouble. The characters are stereotypes which makes it an easy read, but this book is not about personalities - it's about a fun plot, plenty of action, and despite the unlikely premise, believable and down to earth.

Although I like this book - I don't think I'll be reading many more in the series. When I read the synopses and just saw more of the same, and pretty much being sequels to this book I was a bit put off. My feelings is that no book in a series should rely on a previous book too much and may have been better off developing new characters and new cases, with maybe the original characters having the odd walk on role. That's just my preference though, I'm sure that those that like familiarity and easy read for the beach will love them, and I certainly enjoyed reading this one, and would recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining read 24 Jan. 2014

This book has been in my library for around ten months, I downloaded it while it was free but I must admit the title and the cover always put me off reading it. Anyway I finally gave it a chance and I was surprised to find a witty and unusual book filled with interesting characters. It started really well, at times it was crazy, far fetched and totally unbelievable but that didn't matter in fact it was part of it's charm since it never takes itself too seriously, once you start reading you're part of a madcap adventure, it's refreshing and entertaining so don't let the title and cover put you off.

An easy read with a likable character, it was a bit predictable at times but I still enjoyed it. Found myself quite liking the 'baddie' character by the end :) Feel like there's a lot more that could come from Shelby so I will look out for the sequel, but wouldn't splash out for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't judge a book by it's cover [or title]... 14 Jan. 2012
By AyJay TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

... I wasn't too sure what to expect with CARROTS - with this cover and title I was expecting a so-so crime/comedy, with the usual 'ditsy' [dumb] blonde.

But I was in for a surprise; Shelby Nicohls is a sensible and intelligent mother of two, who after developing telepathy after a head injury, has to dodge a criminal who want to silence her AND the head of a mafia family. And also find out how to ward off the work colleague who is trying to steal her husband.

***

CARROTS is fast paced and enjoyable crime, that's part Charlaine Harris and part Janet Evanovich. I'll be checking out the sequel [Fast Money (A Shelby Nichols Adventure)] ASAP.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quirky, good humoured read 29 Sept. 2014
By Mrs am
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Shelby is a stay at home mum that gets caught up in an armed robbery at her local store, this leaves her slightly injured and being able to read others minds.
This is a quirky read and did get a little unbelievable towards the end in the hostage scenes, but other than that it was a good story with some loveable characters that advanced through the story at a good rate.
Left me thinking that maybe it wouldn't be great to read peoples minds!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Carrots it could so easily have been celery! 15 Sept. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book is called carrots because its while Shelby (a wife and stay at home mother) is getting carrots in her local grocery store (to make soup) that her life changes. While picking up her bag of carrots she witnesses a robbery and is shot in the head.Luckily she survives but is a changed woman.
I really enjoyed this book, it is an easy read with lots of action and the author writes with some humour and lots of down to earth female insecurities.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intersting and good fun 28 Sept. 2014

This is what we all wish for, but know that in reality it would kill us. To know what others are thinking all of the time and survive? This was a free book, but I've bought all of the series since. There are bits that are unbelievable, but when you consider hearing thoughts is a bit out there, just put it out of your mind. I never give away plots or the storyline - never read reviews that do. I had this book for free, but would buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars carrot cake 20 Sept. 2014

Who knew a book about carrots could be so intense?!??

Okay, so maybe it isn't entirely about carrots!!

When I saw this book I thought I'd get it for a little light reading... How wrong I was!!

I enjoyed every second of it!! It's funny, it's intense, it's suspenseful and it took a turn that I definitely wasn't expecting!!!

I'll definitely be investing some time into the rest of this series.
