Amazing album,

Don't let the Beefheart purists spoil your fun! His two mid 70's virgin albums contained some amazing moments and provide a fascinating insight when compared with his less commercial musicAbout half this album is from this era, which typically contain beautifully crafted lyrics and music, love songs and harmonic, long lasting dreamy guitar solos... The other half of the album presents Beefhearts alternative side, taken from various later albums. The experimental rythmns and free form lyrics that make Beefheart an underground hero are all presented here To add to all this, between some of the tracks they have inserted short spoken word monologs, some of these are funny, some are serious but all add to the magical feel of the album This is a very good introduction to the music of Captain Beefheart. OK so it doesn't contain any of his earlier more bluesy songs, or anything from the experimental Trout Mask Replica album, but it's the perfect introduction to his later work I would definately recommend this album as an introduction to Beefheart, so long as people realise his earlier songs aren't on this album. For his 60's work you can't beat the Electricity compilation album!

The good captain,
By Hermann Melville (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Carrot Is As Close As A Rabbit Gets To A Diamond (Audio CD)
There are some seriously good songs on this album both from his 'commercial album' attempts and the later brilliantly experimental years. It makes a good collection of songs that would otherwise take some effort to accumulate. Some may criticise the Bluejeans and Moonbeams era but as Kate Bush said 'its an album where Don van Vliet has written lovesongs like no one else'. The label 'commercial Beefheart song' is misleading. They weren't successful, aren't conventional and contain real heart and soul. If you want the radical and raw Beefheart this isn't the album for you but if you want to explore his wider vocabulary there is some great stuff here.

Avoid! Buy "Safe as Milk" instead!,

With eight selections from the two "Tragic Band" albums ("Bluejeans & Moonbeams" & "Unconditionally Guaranteed") you know that this is just a poor selection from the later Virgin albums and not any kind of greatest hits of Captain Beefheart (greatest misses in his case). So for anyone thinking of dipping their toe into Beef music, well, "The Dust Blows Forward" is a better anthology, but for goodness sake, just get "Safe as Milk" or "Shiny Beast" and have done with it! You won't be disappointed, I promise - but you will if you buy this one.
