As one of Britain's most innovative and celebrated composers, Michael Nyman's work encompasses operas and string quartets, film soundtracks and orchestral concertos. Far more than merely a composer, he's also a performer, conductor, bandleader, pianist, author, musicologist and now a photographer and film-maker. Although he's far too modest to allow the description ... Read more in Amazon's Michael Nyman Store

Product Description

A little seen drama based on real events set in the early decades of the 20th century, Emma Thompson characterised the artist Dora Carrington as a woman of unsatisfactorily entangled romantic relationships who only ever found real love once. Unhappily that love, though passionately returned, could never be complete, for the object of her heart was the homosexual writer, Lytton Strachey. Christopher Hampton's film is a quintessentially English affair, in which much of the depth of feeling between the platonic lovers is communicated by Michael Nyman's superb score. Nyman offers the propulsive string figures familiar from his work on such Peter Greenaway dramas as The Draughtsman's Contract, now tempered by the more romantic and melodic sensibility he brought to The Piano. There are four musical portraits of the other men in Carrington's life, while, at Christopher Hampton's request, five pieces, including the intensely moving nine-minute opening "Outside Looking In", are derived from the composer's String Quartet No. 3. Carrington is an emotionally gripping score which rewards close attention. Michael Nyman has also composed memorable scores for Gattaca and Ravenous. --Gary S. Dalkin

5.0 out of 5 stars Michael Nyman and Carrington 7 Oct 2011
Format:Audio CD
This composition to the film Carrington has great beauty. The music is by Michael Nyman.
I had this album about eight months after its release in 1995 when it was at a really low price.
I had heard much of it on Classic FM and loved it. So to find it so cheap was one of those magic moments. Sixteen years later it has been one of my most loved CDs that has been played time and time again.

The film is now largely forgotten. It is a very British film that is a drama based on true events. The film concerns the female artist Dora Carrington in the early years of the 20th Century.
The film explores her failed romances and the one man she truly falls in love with but cannot be satisfactorily connected to because he is homosexual. The film explores passion and depth of feeling between these two people.

The score for the film was composed by Michael Nyman and it is mainly based on one of his earlier compositions the brilliant String Quartet No 3. These influences can be found in the opening track "Outside looking in", the second piece "Opening titles", later pieces"every curl of your head", "Painting the garden of eden" and "Ham Spray House". Also Nyman is clearly inspired by Shubert and the String Quartet in C, D 956 which was used in the film during one scene. (It ss also added as a sort of bonus on the end of this CD performed by Amadeus Quartet and Robert Cohen.)
Also there is original music for this composition including the fabulous opening, and intensely moving movement "Outside looking in" and "Virgin on the roof".
There is a wonderful romantic and melodic tone throughout the score with beautiful and sweet passages. There is the familiar Nyman strings with sweeping emotion married with contemplative sadness and happiness.

3.0 out of 5 stars it's okay 2 Aug 2014
Format:Audio CD
I've never been a one for movie soundtracks, so I'm possibly not the best person to rate this album. I did however buy this album the reason being Michael Nyman and I have to concede there's some good music here, the album starts off excellent, but like all movie soundtracks I find it loses it's flow and becomes boring.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slow-paced, but never boring! 16 July 2000

I find this soundtrack to be very sad, which doesn't mean it isn't beautiful. It also has lively moments, but they end abruptly. Most of the themes are very lento, therefore suitable to the movie's pace. Mr. Nyman had composed some of this music long before he was commissioned to work on the soundtrack, and he managed to give the impression that he knew every character in the movie well. He does not fail at making us aware of the musicality behind the characters emotions. All in all, this soundtrack offers some of the most interesting string arrangemets I've found in contemporary film music.

Yes, gorgeous music from the always moving Michael Nyman. I love his scores. Gattaca and End of the Affair are also stunning.

5.0 out of 5 stars a mrrior of emotions 10 May 2007
By Darryl K. Clark - Published on
Format:Audio CD
nyman's score for 'carrington' just floored me. his music gave insight to the complex and powerful emotions that drove many members of the bloomsbury group and their associates. the amin theme for carrington and lytton strachey was adapted from his string quartet #3. and the end of it is overwhelming in its emotional content. there are shorter pieces that are very rhythmic and lively; then are longer themes that define the men in carrington's life. my personal favorites are 'brenan', 'partridge' and 'floating the honeymoon'. i also like the inclusion of the schubert. this is a very classy score.

When I saw the movie, the music added something more to it...and I believe without it, the movie wouldn't be as entertaining.
