I think the reader will need to have an interest in at least one of the people involved in this life story, probably Lytton Strachey is the prominent more well known, because although it gives good insight into the Bloomsbury set, it is not a biography of the times. I purchased it for the life of Dora herself. Because of that I have found this book perhaps to be the best of the few I have read so far. In particular it deals with her relationship with Lytton which although compelling and sad is also obviously very special to her and a prime example of 'unconditional love'.

I thoroughly enjoyed this well written and enlightening book on Dora Carrington. What emerged for me was her warmth, her sheer joie de vivre and her unwavering and deep love for her unlikely hero, Lytton Strachey. The author was able to convey qualities he had which helped me understand how it was that she devoted her life to him. Carrington's idiosyncratic letters with their marvelously funny drawings and captions were joyful to read. I particularly liked the scholarly approach to her work and life which Gerzina used, and it is a mystery to me why she hasn't had more acclaim as an artist because by golly she was good. Perhaps it was that her devotion, in spreading itself via Strachey to the wonderful homes she created, the gardens and animals with which she enriched them both, meant that her art was just one of her creative outlets. A lovely book about an interesting time and fascinating characters.
