1.0 out of 5 stars Come back Jane Fonda all is forgiven!, 3 July 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Carradine, David's Kung Fu Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I looked forward with great anticipation to getting this video into my hot little hands. After recently piling on the pounds I felt it was time to rediscover a long lost love of fitness and particularly a martial art. Being a fan of the Kung Fu program in which David Carradine starred, I assumed the same Zen ethos would have to shine through in this video. No fancy stuff, just the nuts and bolts of an age old art with a fascinating history. Any idea of the video's grounding in the world of bald headed monks and orange robes going through the paces of a body strengthening routine went out the window when I saw the 'Buck Rogers in the 25th Century' outfits that David and his team wore. I'll never speak ill of Jane Fonda's leg warmers again! The video certainly gives the impression that few of the team had ever practiced these moves before, some looking decidedly awkward and nervous. The pace of the video is adequate, and although each move is viewed form three different angles to give a very comprehensive tuition, the moves are too few and too similar for the viewer to feel that they have learned anything from spending their time watching it. In the wake of recent fitness trends towards Tae Bo, Kickboxing, Kick Fit, Karate Fit etc, this video leaves a lot to be desired. None of the exercises shown would raise a participant's heart rate to the level necessary for fat loss, and definitely not for any cardiovascular benefit. If you feel some kind of curiosity, and are tempted by the price of the video, my advice is as age old as the Kung Fu system - you get what you pay for!

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth it for the stretches alone, 10 Nov 2004
This review is from: Carradine, David's Kung Fu Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When you first watch this video I imagine you will be a bit disapointed. Made in 1987 the costumes, sets and background music are so much of their time that you may feel like you've paid for something that is outmoded, and you'll probably feel embarassed exercising along to it.
Furthermore you will not be introduced to any combat per se. True, the video shows you a number of Kung Fu patterns, but it is up to you to interpret these patterns (this can take years). In any case I would not advise trying to follow the patterns from the video - it moves too quickly, is hard to follow whilst craning your neck to look at the screen, and you will not be aware of any minor mistakes you are making (with no teacher to correct you).
What this video is useful for is the stretches, kicks and stances.
I would have to disagree with the other reviewer's claims that this is not a workout video. Just because these excercises do not increase the heart-rate in the same way that running does does not mean that your body is not being 'worked out'.
The video is divided into five sections, the first of which (The Snake) I've found to be extremely useful. It concentrates on stretching, and anyone who does Yoga will be struck by the similarity between the forms. I practice this section almost everyday and have found that I've increased my flexibility immeasurably. This is vital for Kung Fu. The stretches nourish your limbs and if performed regularly can stop the body from growing old. Truely, there are kung fu masters in their 80s who are as nimble as men half their age.
The stance work is useful too. And the kicking does provide aerobic exercise (to contradict the first review here).
So actually, the way I've used the video (and the way I believe it is most useful) is not as an introduction to Kung Fu (go and join a club instead), but as a workout to increase flexibilty, strength and even chi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kung-Fu combined with Yoga, 18 Feb 2003
This review is from: Carradine, David's Kung Fu Workout [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The first part of the video teaches the postures used in Kung-Fu and other martial arts for exercising the body by stretching and strengthening in a non-sweat manner similiar to Yoga. It's a great way of exercising for long term limbering and fitness, especially for people who are older or less able to take up more physically demanding exercises. These exercises are also great for aiding concentration and relaxation of the mind and body in a unique way. The latter part of the video teaches actual physical Kung-Fu techniques combing posture, punches and kicks. If you've never attempted any martial art before this is a great chance to try it at an easy to follow level.
