Whilst Tom's two daughters are relatively safe from the ongoing conflict, he nevertheless worries about them. Isobel is a pretty eighteen-year-old who marries her sweetheart and moves with him to his poor east London parish, but life is not kind to the couple. The youngest of the three children, fifteen-year-old Grace, is the naughty one, wilful and headstrong. When she finds herself pregnant she is forced to grow up and allows her child to be adopted by her elder sister. But the reappearance of an old acquaintance brings the promise of new hope and happiness to her life.
