Product Description

Product Description

John Carpenter has been setting trends and exciting audiences for a quarter of a century. His first two features were a double-whammy virtually unparalleled in modern cinema - the urban re-working of Rio Bravo, Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), followed by the first and defining slasher movie, Halloween (1979). Since then Carpenter has worked with low and big budgets, directed stars and unknowns, and enjoyed commercial success and suffered critical failure. But he has consistently produced a stream of entertaining, unpretentious movies some of which - particularly Escape from New York (1981) and The Thing (1982) - are now regarded as modern classics. In their Pocket Essential to John Carpenter, Michelle le Blanc and Colin Odell examine and rate every film by this prolific director.

This cheap and cheerful book provides an excellent reference guide to the films of John Carpenter. A very comprehensive guide, this book features information and reviews of all Carpenter's Hollywood films, as well as information on his TV movies and screenplays. It even includes a preview of the upcoming Ghost Of Mars, eagerly awaited by all Carpenter fans. Despite its small size, the book contains a lot of information, and is as enjoyable to read as it is informative. Both authors clearly love John Carpenter films, and this shows in the writing, a nicely personal touch. This book is indespensible for both the die hard fan and casual admirer.

This was the first book I've read in this series and maybe I was expecting a little more, but I confess I found this book to be rather disappointing. When I first saw this book I maybe foolishly assumed it would be a biography of sorts, but instead the book is basically a list of his films in chronological order, each of which has a description of the plot and a critical review. As a fan of Carpenter's work I found the book enjoyable and interesting, but I was hoping to find out more about the man himself rather than just a series of reviews, and there is almost no biographical content. Those who expect a reference book may also be disappointed as the book only provides cursory information about the films, such as the main cast members, the duration, and the usual credits (writer, director, producer, composer) and little else.

All in all I enjoyed reading about some of these films again, and hearing the opinions of the authors, but if you're expecting a biography or a reference book, or a description of his techniques you may well be disappointed.

I am writing this with a little bit of bias involved on two parts. One, I know the authors very well and two, I am the person that the book was dedicated to. Despite this bias, I would like to comment that this book is an invaluable source to one of Hollywood's most brilliant and somewhat underated directors. Colin and Michelle fully grab the essence of his films within their book and anybody can relate to their style of writing. You can feel the thorough enjoyment they got writing it, oozing out of the pages, as you absorb the well collated and researched information. An excellent read and "un-put-downable".
