I first discovered Paul Hillier and the Theatre of Voices in the remainder bin at a local music store and I can only wonder why on earth they ended up there. "Carols from the Old and New Worlds" is a gem. The a capella singing of the group is beyond compare in purity of tone and harmony.They far outshine other a capella groups such as Annonymous 4 and the Boston Camerata. The choice of carols is excellent. Mr. Hillier and his ensemble have brought forth and dusted off old forgotten hymns and presented them in all their glory, as well as performing familiar standbys with a verve and style that makes them sound fresh and new. This has been far and away our family's favorite collection this Christmas season, and even now in mid-January, I find it soothing.

This collection of startlingly surprising carols - many are unusual settings of well-known texts - is an inspiration. How tired one can easily become of all the usual carols we hear Christmas in and Christmas out. Personally I am not a great natural fan of a capella singing. So often it is knowing and over proud of its own virtuosity, calling to mind choir festivals and competitions. The singing on this recording is robust, energetic, celebratory and skillful. Thanks to Paul Hillier for unearthing these carols, ensuring that they are performed brilliantly and for making my Christmas a merrier one!
