If you are already familiar with the music of Bryn Terfel, this Christmas album will sound exactly how you expect it to sound. The booklet contains full lyrics, all in English even for those songs not performed in English.

The main disc contains fifteen tracks, all sung in English except two songs. El nacimiento (Thee birth), which features Mexican tenor Rolando Vilazon, is sung in Spanish. O Jesulein zart (O gentle little Jesus) is sung in German. Of the English tracks, there are two John Rutter compositions (Shepherd's pipe carol, Candlelight carol), a traditional Irish song (Wexford carol) and a traditional Austrian song (Still, still, still) that is common on German Christmas albums but which I rarely see on British or American albums.

The single taken from the album is White Christmas, which is actually a duet with Bing Crosby, created using Bing's original version as a basis. I have mixed feelings about recordings created this way, but I enjoy the Elvis Presley Christmas Duets album, so I know that they can be entertaining. So it is here. Whereas most such duets, including on the Elvis album just mentioned, cut out some of the original vocals and replace them with the new vocals, this duet retains most, perhaps all of, the whole original recording but adds Bryn's vocals, so he has to harmonize with Bing. I understand that Bryn found recording his parts difficult and he may well think it would have been easier to record a solo version, but he got it right in the end and it was well worth the effort. A solo version of White Christmas by Bryn would sound great too, but wouldn't generate the publicity that the duet with Bing created.

First off, I have to admit a large bias in my recommendation of this CD. As a member of the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, I have had the pleasure of being involved in several recordings with Bryn, all of them enjoyable experiences. We recorded this album in the summer of 2010 in Cardiff and I thought very early on in the process that this would be a very good album. The repertoire is a mix of the new and the traditional, all in new arrangements by Chris Hazel, Bryn's regular arranger. Some of the arrangements, such as that for "Still, Still, Still", are quite out of the ordinary and take a little getting used to, while others, such as Rutter's evergreen "Shepherd's Pipe Carol", are very faithful to the original. All are ultimately successful and put a refreshing slant on well known traditionals. One of my favourites has to be "Mary's Boy Child", a fusion of traditional calypso and 1970s Bert Kaempfert!! The release is a double album, a second CD having some of the same repertoire, as well as new tracks, sung in Welsh. Here there are some traditional Welsh carols, not heard on the main CD, and a "pop" song to go out on a high! Despite my bias - I bought about ten of these albums for friends and family - I recommend this album whole-heartedly, both for fans of Bryn Terfel and those people looking for something a bit different in their Christmas listening. Give it a go - I don't think you'll be disappointed!

This is a really beautiful CD with some very moving songs. Different from the standard Christmas carol compilations, of which there are plenty, it's nice to hear some of the lesser known carols and songs, especially when sung by the wonderful Bryn accompanied by the excellent WNO orchestra. I also love the unusual arrangements of well-known carols. Diolch yn fawr Bryn.

More than excellent recording! Arrived late because of all the weather problems in the UK, but was even more welcome when it arrived. The quality of the recording was superb, and the choice of material, plus the wonderful Welsh version as a welcome extra. It brought us back to a beautiful Christmas atmosphere, as we played it while driving through the French countryside.

This is a happy and lighthearted programme of some Carols or religious songs, and popular music, all very atmospheric and will lead you into the festive season with much cheer, Bryn's lovely warm mellow voice, with a little help from "Bing" is just the thing to brighten the cold, dark, Winter days!
