In a perfect world, a timeless hit. In our world, simply a timeless piece. 4 July 2009

The leadoff (albeit by three years) single for Returning Jesus, "Carolina Skeletons" is, simply put, one of the most fantastic pop performances I've ever heard. Pairing a gentle piano accompaniment with a sentimental (but not sacchrine) vocal from Tim Bowness and a gentle clean tone guitar, in a perfect world, this one would have spent a summer dominating the airwaves.

The remainder of the single fills in just how capable craftsmen No-Man had become. "Something Falls" finds Steven Wilson's acoustic guitar arpeggios framing Bowness' gentle-with-just-a-hint-of-remorse vocal with the instrumental backing increasing in density and swirl before collapsing upon itself. In contrast, the lengthy "Close Your Eyes" (also featured on Returning Jesus) builds off hand drums, synthesized strings and a significantly more overt sense of loss in the vocal. It's not a bad piece, though when paired with the title track and "Something Falls", it's easy to overlook. The EP closes with a brief reprise of the title track that nicely frames the record.

The sessions that produced Returning Jesus extended over several years, and a significant amount of superb material emerged. "Carolina Skeletons" works out to be a great teaser for the album (and at the time, it WAS a tease since it was years before the record arrived, not to mention quite a shock after the frantic avant-rock of Wild Opera). This one should not be overlooked, there's plenty worth listening to here. Recommended.
