This is a beautiful record. I first heard 'Hell on the Heart' on my rental car radio driving across western Oklahoma. It stayed in my head for the rest of the 3,000 mile trip. One of many irresistibly catchy tunes on this album. EC's songs are beautifully put together and his dry humour is never far away. Eric's expressive voice and the superb production make the whole album effortless to listen to.
The songs range from the rebellious teenager putting two fingers up to authority to the inevitable self-pitying "where did it all go wrong?" ballad, and finishes with a genuinely touching song about the inevitability of loss and time passing. You'd have to say that this album is not devastatingly original but it doesn't have to be. It's how you like your favourite breakfast in a diner - familiar dishes made from good quality ingredients - cooked to perfection.
