Others, like computer manuals, focus on background and technical information, like how to connect to the Internet and join a chat group. Carol Vorderman's Guide to the Internet falls into the second category. Aimed at first-time Internet users, the guide, co-written by TV personality Carol Vorderman and Internet expert Rob Young, offers a thorough and non-intimidating introduction to the Internet.
Many Internet guides are geared towards US users; refreshingly, Carol Vorderman's Guide to the Internet is written for users dialling up from the UK. Early chapters cover choosing an access provider, the pros and cons of free access and choosing an online service. While there are occasional Web site recommendations, the guide focuses mainly on core skills like how to read Web pages, customising Web browsers, using search engines, newsgroup Netiquette and building your own Web site. Net jargon and quirks are explained in text boxes and at the end of the book there's a useful glossary and directory of Web- related companies. If you know someone who wishes to get online for the first time you could do them a favour and treat them to a copy of this book.
The text is easy to follow and is well supported with screenshots to aid the "newbie" on their first forray into cyberspace. All aspects from logging on the first time and sendidng e-mail to attemping your fist web-page are delt with in a clear and simple manner. There is even a cd-rom with the essential kit to get you started.
I looked through a number of the many introductory works on offer when first starting on the net myself but found this one of the most user-friendly for the UK market.

This book takes you through all you need to know about the web. From how to get online to getting to goods sites this book covers it all. Issuing friendly advice this book will lead any family starting on the web through their first moves.It goes onto explain about building your own Web page . I found the book particulary usefull for finding Web Sites and Search engines. The lists include historic sites , political sites and many others. On the down side this book ,in some instances does not explain what all the 'Words' mean particulary near the ending chapters.
