Book Description

3 Sep 2012 1845337050 978-1845337056

Carol Klein's Favourite Plants brings Carol's first ever book (Plant Personalities originally published in 2004) back into print. It has an elegant new design and format but retains all that makes Carol's books so inspirational and treasured by her many fans.

In this irresistible book Carol Klein celebrates her favourite plants. Setting aside more conventional ways of classification, she urges the gardener to choose what they grow according to plant personalities, asserting that personality traits are as valuable as height, habit and flower colour when planning your planting.

For example, good-natured bread-and-butter plants contribute to the overall beauty of a garden for months, whereas shooting stars offer a brief but breath taking performance. Touchy-feely plants add rich sensuality in contrast to the dash of frivolity provided by wafty whisperers .

Illustrated with superb photographs by Jonathan Buckley, Carol Klein s Favourite Plants will inspire both new and experienced gardeners to see magic in every plant. The result will be a garden of subtlety and richness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes a re-issue, but a glorious one 11 Sep 2012
By emma who reads a lot TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I can totally understand the other reviewer's frustration on finding that this is not a brand-new book but a repackaging of an existing title, Carol Klein's first book Plant Personalities: Choosing and Growing Plants by Character. However, as someone who doesn't own a copy of the previous incarnation, I found this a very lovely book indeed.

Firstly, the production values are great. The binding is similarly substantial (though in yellow cloth this time) to the green spine of Life in a Cottage Garden. The paper is thick, the photos by Jonathan Buckley are as you'd expect very seductive and beautiful. (He also does all the images for Sarah Raven's books, and about the only criticism you could level is that he's slightly too interested for me in the very close-up plant portraits which don't always allow you to see the actual shape of the whole plant. Yet they make for a beautiful book.)

But of course the main delight is Carol's text. Chapter 1 Cinderella Plants covers a lot of spring beauties, such as snowdrops, primula and erythronium. Chapter 2, Bread and Butter Plants goes to the other end of the summer and looks at daisy family members like asters, rudbeckias and helenium, plus other Klein faves such as geraniums, euphorbias, echinops and achillea.

Chapter 2 "Shooting Stars" focuses on those plants with 'fleeting sparkle', like poppies, peonies and bearded irises. Chapter 4 'will of the wisps' turns to grasses and other moving, frondy beauties like thalictrum and nigella. More grasses in chapter 5 with 'Prickly customers', including verbascum and eryngium.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just a repackage - not a new book at all! 3 Sep 2012
By Mary
Format:Hardcover
I love Carol's effusive and effervescent writing style and was really pleased to discover she had written a new book. Alas, on closer inspection, this appears to be just a rejacketed (and possibly updated) version of her book Plant Personalities, originally published in 2004. It's a great read but do yourself a favour and snap up one of many secondhand copies available for just 1p + p&p on Marketplace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! 18 Oct 2012
By Jasmine
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I can't believe how quickly I've read this book. You can hear Carol Klein talking as you read her words and her infectious enthusiasm bursts out from every page. The book is divided into chapters with titles such as 'Will-o'-the wisps and wafty whisperers', 'Cinderella plants' and 'Drama queens'.
The way she writes is like poetry sometimes, these are 2 bits that really jumped out at me...
'Pollination of some species peonies results in the formation of exciting fat seed pods which burst asunder to reveal, in the case of Paeonia mlokosewitschii, plump, orange seeds lying in canoes lined with red velvet.'
Just made me want to have one in my garden!
Then this...
'In full flower and seed Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Herbstzauber' (Autumn Magic) is a hilarious plant. Its massed heads waving upwards, each densely covered in fine hair, look like crowds of furry caterpillars which have climbed to the top of a blade of grass and are wondering where to go next.'
Which made me laugh!
Jonathan Buckley's photographs are amazing too.
The book is a re-print so talks about past Flower Shows and Carol's Nursery but this doesn't detract from the new edition at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carol is a fantastic gardener 10 Oct 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great book and beautifully photographed. I have picked out several plants that Carol loves and purchased them via the Internet since I can't find them in my local garden centre. A joy to read and I love Carol's enthusiasm for plants and gardening. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars An older book reworked 3 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I've always been a fan of Carol Klein as both TV presenter and author. This is a good, well illustrated read. It loses a star merely because it's a rehash of an earlier work and you may prefer to look for a second hand copy of that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners! 31 Dec 2012
By Binky
Format:Hardcover
If like me you're a keen beginner and know the overall effect you want to create in your garden, but are still learning about plants, then this is a really great book to choose. Dividing the plants into 'personalities' makes for a great introduction to them and gives valuable insight for planning a year-round garden. We recently bought a property with a rather bare garden and I've spent a lot of time and money trying to bring some colour into it, but reading this made me realise I've been planting 'Cinderellas' each season (truthfully . . . whatever I found at Homebase!) and that I was in need of some 'Bread and Butter' plants to balance everything out.

Other plant or garden design guides tend to assume a certain level of knowledge and to be honest can be a little overwhelming. This was just the book I needed to restore my enthusiasm and excitement and I've used it alongside my RHS Complete Gardener's Manual to come up with some exciting ideas for the garden -- and I can't wait to try them out!

I bought this for myself but it would also make a lovely gift as it's a really beautifully put together book with some gorgeous photos.
