about THE JAZZ PICTURES
Just over two decades ago, Carol Friedman began a series of portraits of jazz musicians that would come to define the essence of her style. This assemblage makes evident her admiration for-and keen attention to-her subjects and the jazz form itself. These photographs capture the intrinsic quality of the music and portray the personal style and idiosyncratic charm that have long been the hallmark of jazz men and women.

Thank you for your interest in THE JAZZ PICTURES. When I began to photograph jazz musicians in 1976, I soon realized that although I loved to watch these artists perform, I didn't have much interest in making photographs that documented their performance. I came to learn that an artist's musical personality and style was as prevailing off the bandstand as on. This led to an ongoing series of portraits that would last more than twenty years. I have compiled my favorite images from this collection for this book. I hope thatyou enjoy THE JAZZ PICTURES.
