an album worthy of the highest praise 11 April 2003
By adam c phillips - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you're one of those people who likes to uncover buried treasure......this is your band. Carnival is a record that received little or no promotion when it was released a couple of years ago, and it is a shame. This kind of talent comes along once in a great while. The production on this record is crisp, powerful, dense and flawless. Songs like "Slide" and "So Much Better" will hypnotize you and then pounce on you the very moment you feel safe. John Hogg is one of, if not THE best vocalist in the last ten years. Do you think this is just hype? Listen to the record. He's one part Robert Plant, One part Bob Marley, a dash of Chris Robinson and ten parts pure originality and soul....amazing. Again, the Brits are coming to save rock and roll. Please treat yourself to this experience. Highlight tracks: "Hanging Around", "Liar", "Slide", "I Don't Mind".

CARNIVAL: MOKE impresses and wins over another one. 25 Aug 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
MOKE This album is a true GEM. Somewhere, among all of the garbage that is peddled out there passing for rock and roll, there are incredible bands producing some amazing music. For whatever reason, (one of the great mysteries of the universe) some bands fly under the radar. MOKE is just such a band. So listen up, do yourself a favor and pick up CARNIVAL, you’ll impress your friends. To give you a brief idea, MOKE has plenty of electric guitar, but it’s not like an assault or anything--They know how to use their amplifiers tastefully. It sounds GREAT loud - which is a testament to the excellent production. The playing is second to none-it’s impeccable. The songs are well written-making this a VERY FRESH album. There’s nothing boring, stupid, or predictable. Nowhere on this album did I feel like I heard a song somewhere else before. I think that one of the reasons they sound so fresh is because MOKE is British, but CARNIVAL doesn’t sound anything like what Americans usually hear coming out of England. (It’s not too moody or overly poppy). There are great up tempo numbers "My Degeneration" "Slide"(!) "So Much Better" "Hanging Around" and some fine slower ones “Today” (which does sound particularly British), “I Don’t Mind,” “Strange Days,” and “Fluicide”(!) These are all, dare I say, beautiful songs, amplified. Finally! Some guitar rock that doesn’t need a DJ, (LimpKit) doesn’t whine (Staind), and isn’t modern day prog.-rock (Tool), and doesn’t stink in general (see above, plus korn). Comparisons are dangerous, but...Someone who appreciates “Gish” should definitely own this.

Amazing Album, Amazing Band 8 July 2002
By Amy N. Hewgill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Moke released it's 2nd album Carnival in July 2001, but was underpromoted & performed sadly because of it. Despite this, Carnival is my absolute favorite cd. This band constantly whips out simple & melodic beauties in short 3 1/2 minute packages, which leave you wanting more. Moke's music is a combination of beautiful Beatles-type 3 part harmonies, heavy guitars, with a solid rhythm section to back it all up. In addition, they are always mixing up the time signatures to add greater depth to the music.

If you like the samples you hear, I guarantee you'll love the album. "Slide" still gives me goose bumps when the electric guitar kicks in. "My Degeneration" was the first (and only) single released, also a very good rockin' song. "So Much Better" & "I Don't Mind" are both incredibly powerful songs.

It's rare to find an album that excites me lyrically & musically, but this is one of them.

If you like this album also check out their debut album... in America it's called simply "Moke", in the UK "Superdrag." Bloody Brilliant!
