Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) and Sandy (Art Garfunkel) find their sexual attitudes and aptitudes changing as they move through life from college to middle age. When they share a room as students, Jonathan gives Sandy tips on women, only to conduct an affair with Sandy's girlfriend Susan (Candice Bergen) behind his back. Later, after Sandy and Susan are married, Jonathan conducts a long affair with Bobbie (Ann-Margret), and faces a difficult decision after she attempts suicide.

Mike Nichols captivated the cinema world with The Graduate and returned with this film of sexual angst over a twenty year period. Jack Nicholson dominates in his role as the selfish and ultimately self destructive Jonathan but veers towards being over the top in his bullying, self pitying rages. Art Garfunkel, as his friend, plays wonderfully but is overwhelmed by Nicholson's raw energy and emotion.

Candice Bergen never really strikes me as right but Ann-Margret is brilliant as the girl who Nicholson destroys. Worth seeing - of course - worth putting in your top 100 ???????????

Format: DVD
Mike Nichols' bitter black comedy, depicting the sex lives of Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel as representative American males from their virginal days as post-war college room-mates into jaded middle age. Ann-Margret gives an outstanding performance as Jack's seemingly-perfect girlfriend, a depressed former model. The widescreen format is used imaginatively, and the songs featured on the soundtrack evocative.

This humorous yet dark film, which was very daring in its day, is by now quite dated though one wonders whether the sexism it portrays isn't still prevalent in Western societies. Interesting to see Jack Nicholson near the start of his career - in a Lothario role of course - and to see Art Garfunkel acting rather than singing. Ann-Margret is heartbreaking as the woman who truly falls for Nicholson - her despair shows the shadow side of the swinging lifestyle.

How long have i been searching for a film that perfectly demonstrates the complexity and the wonder of the male psyche? I am of the opinion that with this film my search came to an end. Mike nichols, best known for the brilliant film "the graduate" performs his duty as director with the same craft and spendour in "Carnal Knowledge". A young Jack Nicholson wonderfully plays a character that we all find ourselves becoming at one point or another, he reminds us all of the raw animalism that exists in all men. This is surely a performance that would be a standout for most actors, but because of his undeniable brilliance, this is one of his lesser known roles. The surpise package in the film comes in Art Garfunkel, a man known for his musical skills, but maintains a strong screen presence and achieves a perfect charecterisation as the sweet but somewhat naive co-lead male role. The effect of the film is clearly demonstrated in the work of Woody Allen, and the philosophy which the film encorporates will stay with the most simple minded of audience.

Jack Nicholson steals every scene he is in, in this thought provoking although some what dated film. It still has resonance today in terms of people not being satisfied with what they have and the roller-coaster of relationships. Art Garfunkel in a non-singing but well performed role as his best and more innocent friend.
