Book Description

12 Mar 2012
When a massacre takes place in a Harlem school, Lamar, a New York detective for twelve years, is called to the scene. A student, aged seventeen, has shot everyone in his path before shooting himself. Having collected all the evidence, Lamar reconstructs the blood-soaked morning of the killer. Ten days later, a second massacre occurs at a school in Queens. Once more, a student kills multiple victims before turning the gun on himself. A new massacre occurs elsewhere. Three sets of killings in three weeks, all the same with the perpetrators committing suicide. It isn't just a coincidence...

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but powerful. 6 April 2012
Format:Paperback
This book might be short but it's quite a powerful story.

We are introduced to Lt. Lamar Gallineo who is in brought in to investigate a massacre in a high school in Harlem. The writing is quite blunt at times, at times brutal, very direct and to the point. The scene is set well and we are drawn in by the Author. As Gallineo is inverstigating the massacre, a second and third massacre occur in other schools. We the reader are soon on a journey and we soon realise that things are not as cut and dried as they appear to be.

I really enjoyed this book and demolished it in a couple of hours due to it being just over a 100 pages. I did guess some of the outcome from early on but that didn't deter in any way from the story or my enjoyment of it. I will look out for more books by this Author once they have been translated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A quick, engaging read 21 Aug 2012
Format:Paperback
What intrigued me the most about Maxime Chattam's Carnage when I first saw this title on the publisher's website was its length. With only 112 pages, it has to be the shortest thriller/mystery I've ever seen and read and I was really looking forward to seeing how the story would unfold in such a short time. I don't normally read such short stories but Carnage was an exception - the synopsis sounded brilliant and as I love crime, I knew I had to read it. And I have to say, it was definitely a pleasant surprise!

Carnage is one of those books that can be read in one sitting, or on your way to and fro work if you're a commuter. It's fast paced, terribly gripping and it's full of twist and turns which I didn't see coming at all. In spite of its shortness, the story still feels complete. Every mystery is solved by the end, and there are no questions that remain unanswered. Lamar Gallieneo is a likeable character and even though the book's length doesn't allow much character development, you still can't help being drawn to his story and hoping he'd come out of all this unharmed.

Filled with suspense from start to finish, Carnage is a quick, engaging read which fans of crime fiction are guaranteed to enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Predictable 15 Sep 2012
By James N Simpson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Carnage is a short story that was originally written in French. It has been translated into English but seems to have lacked an editor after that was done. With phrases such as "He was frowning, trying to anticipate the path of vehicles that might cut him up." (p17), Carnage becomes a bit more of comedy than it was obviously intended to be. Humorous poor translations aside, the plot itself is fairly basic, it follows the investigation of a school massacre in New York. It seems like a simple suicide shoot up, but then a second school massacre occurs, then another. Unfortunately it is pretty obvious when Lieutenant Gallineo opens the closet in the first school what is going on. This wouldn't be so bad if we were taken on at least an interesting journey to the final page, unfortunately Carnage is a pretty boring tale.
