A pleasing read 9 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a pleasing collection of short stories, following the main character Carnacki through a series of his adventures with spirits from beyond the grave. The stories where easy to read and followed on in the same format. I like reading short stories and these where no exception. However, the only point I felt that they lacked a little depth. Perhaps a little more information on what the evil entity was, rather than so much of the telling of the tale. Overall a nice a nice read.

I am a huge fan of stories of crime and the supernatural from the early part of the twentieth century and have read the original Carnacki stories. I was a little wary of this collection - very few pastiches of classic fiction really work well - but I was pleasantly surprised by it. William Meikle has ably captured the tone of the original stories, and presents an entertaining, well-rounded set. The last tale, about the Lusitania, is particularly clever and quite chilling. I have not read any of Mr Meikle's other works, but he should definitely visit Carnacki again in the future.

The one criticism I have of the book is its formatting, and that is why it merits only four stars. As others have noted, speech quotes are missing in many cases, as are full stops at the end of many paragraphs; a few spelling mistakes; also, two of the stories are repeated in the text. Whilst this does not detract from enjoyment of the tales, the publishers should correct this sloppy presentation as it will deter many from reading any more books from the same stable.

Great stories, formatting wanting 12 Nov 2010
By G. Hennessee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had previously read the William Hope Hogdson and enjoyed it. This continuation by William Meikle is very true to the tone of the original material but suffers from formatting problems in the Kindle version. One story is mostly duplicated at the end of itself and the story following it is missing a lot of opening quotes. I'm about half way through the book and I do recommend it but it would be nice if the formatting problems get fixed.

Sherlock Holmes and Poirot meet the X-Files 14 Oct 2010
By R. Russell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I LOVED this book and couldn't turn the pages fast enough! Imagine a Victorian England where haunts, vengence seeking ghosts and buried evil that doesn't stay buried, are common place and investigated by a paranormal detective; and overlay it on the Victorian England we know. The feeling of things being slightly different doesn't throw you out of the story, it adds to the thrill of the story.

After each adventure, Carnacki invites his friends to dinner and then tells the latest tale over drinks and smokes in the parlor before the fire.

The settings are richly detailed and the atmosphere vividly described; you can feel and smell the dampness of the fog on your skin, taste the food and drinks of each meal and feel the horror of each paranormal encounter. You'll feel like you are there with Carnacki, experiencing everything he does.

I highly recommend this collection of stories and can't wait for the author to write more Carnacki tales. So buy the book, put your feet up, get your favorite drink and settle in for some thrilling ghost stories that will stay with you long after you read the last page.

More spellbinding suspense from the master 9 Dec 2010
By Scott Nicholson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
William Meikle has become one of my favorite storytellers--here with a trademark mingling of intrigue, suspense and fantasy in these linked tales. Part Sherlock Holmes, part Lovecraft, and all Meikle, these tales are perfect for curling up on a foggy night with a bottle and a fire.
