Product Description

‘‘Although Carlos Kleiber’s fanatical perfectionism has allowed us only a few orchestral and operatic recordings, they are all priceless mementoes of a conductor and personality who was unlike any other.’’ Jon Tolansky

Without a doubt, Carlos Kleiber was one of the most charismatic conductors in the second half of the 20th century. With this deluxe four-disc set of newly remastered recordings DG celebrates his unique, iconic art.

The edition includes:
- newly remastered versions of Kleiber’s orchestral recordings at 24 bit / 96 kHz.
- a BluRay Audio disc containing all the works AND a 70-minute audio documentary (“Carlos Kleiber – A Memoir”), tracing Kleiber’s career and his extraordinary ability to inspire the musicians he worked with.
- a 32-page booklet with a new article and timeline by journalist and author Jon Tolansky, who worked with Kleiber. The booklet also includes original covers and new rare photos of the conductor in the recording studio in Vienna, 1973 – moving documents of his passionate search for perfection.

WHAT THIS IS NOT: Carlos Kleiber - Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon.
-- Deutsche Grammophon issued that box four years ago.
Twelve CDs containing Carlos Kleiber's complete recordings for DG.
Five Symphonies on three CDs and four Operas on nine CDs:

The box under review contains only the five Symphonies on three CDs:
Beethoven Symphonies 5 and 7, Brahms Symphony 4, Schubert Symphonies 3 and 8.

BUT this new box also includes a single BLU-RAY AUDIO disc that duplicates the content of the three CDs (2 hours, 38 minutes).

YOU DON'T NEED A SPECIAL BLU-RAY AUDIO PLAYER.
It will play on any Blu-Ray Video player.
Keep the video output connected to your TV to read the disc menu.
Connect the audio to your Hi-Fi system.

Its not uncommon to find ordinary CDs remastered at "24-bit/96 kHz", but the CD medium is incapable of accurately reproducing everything on the master.
You need SACD or Blu-Ray Audio to realise the full potential of the original master tape.
The only real advantage of Blu-Ray over the older SACD technology is a longer playing time - The Blu-Ray Audio disc included with Solti's Ring plays for fifteen hours.

You get a choice of 2 channel sound or 5 channel surround:
2.0 LPCM 24-bit/96 kHz - or
5.0 DTS HDMA 24-bit/96 kHz

The surround sound is remixed from the master tape.
The two channel option faithfully reproduces the original master tape approved by Carlos Kleiber.

This high definition sound is as good as you can get today.
It may be too good.
The Vienna Philharmonic is a tight squeeze in my apartment.

Firstly to be clear the performances of Carlos Kleiber offered here are above reproach - art of the highest order. The three stars are for the bizarre presentation. The packaging is impractical - where do you stack such an odd sized and shaped box? It is also all-too-easy to damage the discs' surfaces as you remove the lower of the two discs in this silly double-decker arrangement. The 'book' contains no more information than was the norm on the back of a decent LP. It also contains no remarkable 'insights' into the perplexing personality of this genius-conductor that are not already well-known. The photos in the 'book' are fewer than the blub leads one to expect and on the whole fairly unremarkable.
For 'artistic impression' of the music making no number of stars would be too many.
For 'presentation' - the box etc two stars are two too many.

Although these recordings have been released many times, included a SACD release of Beethoven symphonies Nos. 5 & 7, this is the first time that Brahms 4 and Schubert 3 & 8 appear in a high definition release. And they are certainly welcome, especially since the sound is very detailed and appealing. You also have the choice of a 5.0 surround track track. The recordings are beyond praise. These are "grand" interprations in the very best sense - dynamic and inspired. Wiener Philharmonics play wonderfully. Carlos Kleiber - 'primus inter pares'? It is sad that he did so few recordings. (There is a disadvantage with Bluray compared to SACD - you have to have a TV or a monitor to navigate when you start the disc.)
