Book Description

This is about a Cuban boy, who roamed the streets barefoot when he should have been in school, stole fruit from neighbours' orchards, was always hungry and wanted nothing more than to be a football star, just like any other young boy. But it didn't work out that way. He achieved the fame and fortune that he always dreamed about, but in a very different profession. He became a ballet dancer.

About the Author

Margaret Willis's interest in ballet stems from a five-year stay in the former Soviet Union (1976-81) where she studied classical ballet and began writing on dance. Visiting Cuba in 1990, she first saw Carlos Acosta and has continued to follow his stellar career. She was a member of London City Ballet from 1990-3, performing principal character roles, is the author of Russian Ballet on Tour and contributed several articles for the International Dictionary of Ballet. She writes regularly for The Dancing Times, Dance Magazine and international publications. In 1986, she was the researcher for a BBC-TV documentary on the Bolshoi Ballet.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Cuban Hero 6 Dec. 2012
By Francis
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I quite enjoyed the book but most of it was a rehash of Acosta's autobiography. I learned very little new about him. She could have elaborated on his various partnerships such as Tamara Rojo and others of the Royal Ballet. Also more could have been included about the other companies with which he danced.

A great book. Really enjoying an insight into Carlos' life starting from a child and being pushed into dancing by his Father.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good biography 18 July 2013
By Elia M. Pestana - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It repeats the story of his autobiography. It adds a little about his ballet partners. I was hoping that it has more information about his interactions with other ballet dancers in the different companies.
