These recordings span a period from 1955 to 1980 so some of the earlier recordings, particularly those in mono, inevitably show their age; one would hardly acquire thsis set as a direct replacement for one's favourite version of the various works included in this set. Having said that, the general quality of the recordings is very good and rarely a limiting factor in enjoying these generally superlative performances. The soloists tend to be some of the finest of their day and the sheer radiance of their music-making tends to shine through.

I found it difficult to stop playing most of this set over and over again and was reminded of the chromium- plated brittleness that seems to afflict so many modern recordings. I recommend this set to anyone who loves their classical music rather than just the sound it makes.

If you are a new comer to the Great Man - I doubt there is a much better introduction.

This makes a wonderful gift, for a music lover who likes their music the way it USED to be done. No flashiness here, just honest brilliance and good musicianship. If you want flourishes and histrionics, look elsewhere. If, however, you wish to have a WONDERFUL evening in, with some old favourites presented with the Maestro's own insights - what a wonderful collection.

Give yourself, a friend or your hi-fi a treat !!

Simply and plain Carlo Maria Giulini is one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. The EMI recordings testify the Giulini's greatness as musician and conductor. Five stars for Giulini and the recordings that shows a consistent sound quality in spite of the about forty years lapse in the recording sessions.
