Publishing News

A lively and exotic adventure novel, thronging with picaresque
characters, raucous magic and unfamiliar customs.

Book Description

In Jakarta, Sam Rivers is all set to marry his Indonesian
love, Fon. But life takes an odd turn when, against her advice, he goes
into business with Pak Suryono to smuggle a semi-human creature from the
archipelago to Australia.
Madness? Yes, but typical of a white man. His behaviour in Kenukecil is no
surprise to its people, nor are his peculiar companions - including
disgraced returnee Pak Wim and the flame-haired, husband-seeking Dr
Aletheia Groeber, bestselling American author of anthropology tome "Fuck
The Savages". All of which helps explain the island's popular prayer: "May
both God and the ancestors protect us, for here comes another one."

While Sam succumbs to malarial fevers his strange cargo escapes to rampage
among the local young women, much to their delight. With angry fathers on
the hunt, demanding blood, can Sam find the short man before it's too
late?

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, full of subtle and mischievous humour!, 26 Jun 2007
This review is from: Cargo Fever (Paperback)
I bought this book to read on holiday. I accidentally got into it after reading a few pages at home and finished it a few days after that. From word go the author's mischievous humour and colourful characters are a source of great hilarity, as are the rather strange customs of the people of the small Indonesian island where the book is set. There again, that is nothing to the strangeness of the westerners in the novel whose perfectly sensible actions, when seen through the eyes of the locals, are proven to be founded in utter madness!

A raucous romp - hughely enjoyable, and I will most certainly be looking out for this author's second novel.

A great page-turner that will have you hooked until the final high wire scenes. An air of mystery is maintained throughout, but the story moves forward at great speed - skillfully weaving together numerous characters, and all the while exposing the social, cultural and community clashes that underpin the novel's narrative drive.

A very promising debut novel.
