1.0 out of 5 stars Meh! 10 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Normally I stay away from American historical romance. But I have prime so decided to give this one a go. I like some of the author's books. I should have stayed away. I didn't even finish it. I cared not about stupid Amanda( wants Tony despite the bad treatment he and his mistress dishes out)and shrivelling weak mind Tony. The only true to their nature person was Letty...the antagonist of the story. Seen as moral and gentle but a true southern 'belle' of her time. Evil and thinks the world belongs to her- she's superior and can do what she wants.

This story with the many depictions featuring the Mammy, Jemma, with her signature wide grin and large, white, shining teeth. Portraying the image of constant contentment, thus serving as an important symbol- the suggestion of being well treated by her master, Tony. Of course Jemma is obese in figure, with her comedic behaviour, due to her betrayal of the common standards of beauty for women with a thin frame, like Letty. And, finally, with the addition of the headscarf, the image of the black Mammy would be complete.

Amanda and Tony will be okay at the end of the story. Hope Letty gets her comeuppance.

So there you have it. I stay way from A.H.R.

1.0 out of 5 stars hell no! 16 Oct 2012

I can't believe i fell for that one five star review and ordered this book! this book was a fest of rape and abuse where the heroine is raped continuously from the beginning to the end by at least 6 different people the single guy who apparently loves her abuses her a bit too ,boots on necks ,forcing slaves to rape ,wardens raping, Indians raping, attempted murders ,child abuse and so on and if these are not enough you have the hero changing woman like you change gloves and enjoying it at that right in front of the heroine and she forgives him multiple times ,but still says he loves her!shocker of all shockers the ex mistress is evil personified not just jealousy but serial killer tendencies . If the absurdity of so many atrocities happening in one book, and to two people was not put down to the genre you have to laugh out loud at how comical it all was and not in a funny way!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Page Turner 14 April 2006

I Loved this book, Amanda is wandering around unable to find her way home in the fog and ends up near the docks where she is mistaken for a prostitute. Two "Gentlemen" buy her services for a farewell present for their friend who is leaving for the American Colonies. Unable to persuade them that she is not that sort of girl they usher her into a room to await Tony Brandt. Rather into his cups he doesn't quite realise that she is a virgin.

Her mother is frantic with worry and is ill of health, Amanda steal a loaf of bread to feed herself and her mother but gets caughts and ends up on a convict ship headed to the Amercan Colonies.

Once there Tony Brandt buys her not realising that this was the girl he made love to before he left for the colonies but Amanda recognises him immediatley.

Letty, Tony's mistress takes an instant dislike to her and causes trouble from the start, the things she does is pure evil. Sometimes i hated Tony for the way he treated Amanda and wished she would fall in love with Tony's plantation overseer Nathan who dearly loved Amanda.

This story has it all Love, Hatred, Jealousy, it wrung all emotions from me some parts of the book i had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat for what Amanda was put through, some people may think it's a bit far fetched, but this and probably a lot worse happend to women convicts in this era.
