Review
'George is one of the best crime novelists around – there's a richness and psychological depth to her work which lifts it well above genre fluff.' (Time Out )

'Her account of surfers' lives, with their terrifying techniques and almost religious passion is worth reading.' (Jessica Mann, Literary Review )

On WHAT CAME BEFORE HE SHOT HER: 'She's brilliant.' (Guardian )

'Absolutely remarkable and a great achievement’' (Boyd Hilton, BBC Radio FiveLive )

Product Description
It is barely three months since the murder of his wife and Thomas Lynley takes to the South-West Coast Path in Cornwall, determined to walk its length in an attempt to distract himself from his loss. On the forty-third day of this walk, he sees a cliff climber fall to his death a death apparently witnessed by a surfer in a nearby cove. Shortly afterwards, Lynley encounters a young woman from Bristol whose personal history is a blank before her thirteenth year. These events propel him into a case that brings Barbara Havers from London and thrusts both detectives into a world where revenge is only one of the motives they must sift through to identify a killer.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ms George needs an editor, 7 Aug 2008
By Fiona Macrae (Scotland) - See all my reviews
I was a big big fan of Elizabeth George, but I think she has been so successful that no-one now dares make editorial suggestions. Which is a shame as she needs them. This book is dire, it is hugely overwritten, could be cut back by at least one third of the words without losing the plot, or whatever there is of characterisation. I know Ms G prides herself on getting UK details like names etc right but she has gone badly wrong here. No-where will you find such a concentration of Cornish names, even in Cornwall, and what is 'dirty rice'. Most of the characters are totally non credible and even the credible ones are awful. Whatever happened to the Elizabeth George who wrote A Suitable Vengeance and For the Sake of Elena? If she comes back I might buy more of this series, otherwise, I won't be bothering.

2.0 out of 5 stars A disappointment - not up to expectations, 27 Jul 2008
By DaviesUK (London, England.) - See all my reviews
AS a great fan of Elizabeth George's Inspector Lynley novels, I was looking forward to reading this one. As I expected, it was full of Lynley-angst following the death of his wife and unborn child, but it was strangely unmoving. The novel was peopled with a large number of characters none of whom I cared about or was interested in, there was too little Havers, and the plot was contrived, convoluted and at the same time obvious.

I finished reading it because a book has to be truly dire before I abandon it half way through, but I can only hope the next novel,if there is one, is a return to form. Another one like this, and I'll give up on this series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bitterly disapointed, 13 Sep 2008
By Sue Carter "sukysue2" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been so looking forward to the latest instalment in the Lyndley chronicles but I am sorry to say this book has been a complete let down. The main thing that I really hated were the names of the characters a minor point I know but this really irritated me. The book didn't ring true somehow ......when I think of her first books ,which were brilliant and unputdownable, it is hard to believe they were written by the same author, to be honest I think she has given us three dud books on the trot and I wonder if she has just run out if steam.I hope not .
