Biography

2013 marks the 25th anniversary of a certain young band from Glasgow’s first public concert.

That night in March 1988, nobody looking towards the stage of Dundee University students’ union would have been any the wiser about the unknown and unsigned vision before them. A female-fronted quartet with a twangy, gang-like swagger harking back to the pout and punch of Blondie and ... Read more in Amazon's Texas Store

Product Description

It's taken Texas 14 years and six albums, but in Be Careful What You Wish For they've finally made a record that sounds like Texas. From doomed early attempts to revive the blues, to the Motown soul and Phil Spector-pop of the multi-million selling White on Blonde and The Hush, they've always been obsessed with the past. And while they've delivered some great songs in the process, the retro styling always made it feel like they were running through someone else's long lost hits. For Be Careful What You Wish For, frontwoman Sharleen Spiteri and co have blurred the vintage soul references with a deluge of other sounds, old and new. "Telephone X" writhes to a spiky, new-wave stomp, "Place in My World" brims with breathless synths and the sauntering "Carnival Girl" pairs a dusty old groove with Kardinal Offishall's ragga rapping.

Without the slavish devotion to the 1960s, the focus has shifted, pushing the real Texas—Spiteri's gorgeously understated vocals and beautiful sun bleached melodies--to the fore. The songs themselves might not be quite the instant radio hits that "Say What You Want" and "Black Eyed Boy" were, but like the purring title track, they shimmer with the subtle pop sophistication needed to make Be Careful What You Wish For an enduring classic. --Dan Gennoe

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting there!! 23 Jan 2004
Format:Audio CD
I've been a fan of Texas since the beginning, and am probably one of the few who own both Mother's Heaven and Rick's Road - and actually think these albums are superior to others since. I almost feel cheated that Texas are famous again - before, I felt a kind of superiority (I know something you don't know!!). The past few albums haven't really struck me in the same way, although Put Your Arms Around Me is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.
I've so far only listened to BCWYWF a few times, but it's good!! It feels like sitting down with an old friend you haven't seen in a long time, who has changed but is still the same, rather than meeting a friend of a friend who you know you should get on with!! (and hopefully that makes sense!).
Anyways - thanks for a great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wish come true... 22 Oct 2003
Format:Audio CD
I pretty much own every single thing Texas has ever produced singles and album wise, and I can safely say this ranks as one of their best ever efforts it's been a long wait worthwhile wait. Vocally Sharleen is as mighty as ever and the Spiteri/McEhlone songwriting partnership is as strong as ever. A partnership which has been given extra spice in the form of Robbie Williams ex songwriter (you didn't think he wrote them himself did you?) Guy Chambers & Ex Lightning Seed main man Ian Broudie .

They have tried something new with this album and all credit to them it works like a dream. I could do a track by track review but I'm not. What I will say is that every single track on the album has single written all over it. All the tracks stand out in their own right. All I can say is maybe Carnival Girl was the wrong track to release as a first single, perhaps And I Dream which sounds great live, would have been a better choice. All in all this album is definately worth your money. If you wish for it you will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 21 Oct 2003

Texas are back! A really good album, I especially like 'Telephone X', 'Broken', 'I'll See it Through' and 'Place in my World'

I doubt it will be as big as such albums like 'White on Blonde' and 'The Hush'

I feel after releasing their greatest hits, they are starting over again with a refreshing new sound but with Sharleen's never ageing voice, its perfect, she could sing anything!

I wish them all the luck and i havnt stopped listening to the album in days! Im hooked!
