3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Nevlana's 'Care Bear Family', 19 Sep 2004
This review is from: Care Bears - Vol. 1 [DVD] (DVD)
This DVD contains the first two pilot episodes of the Care Bears and a number of the DIC version of the Care Bears. Either companies efforts are up to the standards of Nelvana's 'Care Bear Family' in terms of story or Animation quality, this is especially true of the first two cartoons; which were made by Atkinson Film Arts in 1983, before the two movies come about. The synopsis on the back of the package manages to get details wrong about a few of the cartoons, mostly for Birthday, Braces and Split Decision. The only major antagonist in any of the episodes is Professor Coldheart, who only appears in the first two cartoons.

Episodes - ( With amendments to some synopsises).

The Freeze Machine - The second pilot episode, which is strangely placed as the first episode on the disc... Filled with annoying songs and lacklustre animation, the professor employs the help of a bullied boy to finish his freeze machine.

The Land without feelings - The first pilot episode staring the bears, a boy named Kevin is taking into Coldheart's castle to be another of his slaves after running away. The care bears race to his rescue all the while singing about sharing feelings and love. Out of the two pilot episodes this is the better of the two although the animation isn't any better and the songs are just as bad.

The Birthday - (The synopsis on the package refers to another episode). It is Birthday Bear's birthday (he forget himself) and the bears throw him a party; only to go to Earth to help a boy who thinks that his parents have forgotten his birthday in light of his new baby sister. Jealous and influenced by his friend wreck the household.

Camp - The care bears help two complete opposites, who are setup as camping buddies to find ways of using those differences to aid and strengthen their friendship all the while worrying about the legend of the flying phantom.

Braces - A kid named Joey is worried about his braces and is bullied by Roger, who later is helped out by the bears and decides to change his ways.

Spilt Decision - The care bears help a kid with his self-confidence by playing a game of football/soccer against a group of bullies.

The Last Laugh - Cheer Bear is upset that her attempts to bring a smile to Grumpy Bears face. In an attempt to put a smile on her face Swift heart organises a comedy show. One of my favourite of the DIC episodes, and one that deals with the relationships of the bears rather than the usual help a child in distress ones. The intro on this episode is a sort of parody of the intro on 'The Freeze Machine' episode.

The show must go on - Not listed as an episode on the package (although a screenshots is present), or on the DVD's menu. The care bears try to convince ballet dancer Patty to return to the pageant even though her father is late arriving. Meanwhile the cousins go to find her father, who is stuck behind his desk thanks to his mean boss. This is one of the few episodes where the bears and cousins talk to the adult characters.

There are no extras or subtitles on the disc, and the disc is hard to recommend with Nelvana's take on the bears out on DVD as well, however if you or your kids love the care bears, or are a fan of 1980's animation then you can't really do worse than this, but there's better shows out there.
