Book Description

Cardiff After Dark is the first monograph by British-based Polish photographer Maciej Dakowicz. Dakowicz spent five years photographing the nighttime revelries that take place in Cardiff over the weekend. Focused around a few pedestrianized streets in the city centre, Dakowiczs images capture nightlife fueled by alcohol and emotions. The arc of an evenings entertainment is captured in these candid photographs, which reveal fun and hilarity as well as fighting and drunken exhaustion. There are stag nights and hen parties, men dressed as superheroes and women dressed as Playboy bunnies, mountains of discarded chip wrappers, arrests by the police, and lots and lots of posing for photographs. Dakowiczs images, at times shocking or upsetting, form an important documentary photobook of British urban life in the early part of the 21st century.

Product Description

Review

Its clear that amid the tides of rubbish, tangled limbs and drunken antics, Dakowicz captures a more nuanced picture of a British city's nightlife: one that may have tears, vomit and sometimes blood, but also includes joyfulness, camaraderie, fun and friendship - and moments of splendidly surreal humor. --Metro

Epic ... a hymn to camaraderie and hedonism --The Observer

Though this book has come in for a bit of stick from the press I think it has genuine artistic merit and provides a valid sociological document of our times ... It also makes the ideal present for the kind of person who is really difficult to buy for. --Proper Magazine

Dakowicz's lens, neither judging nor flattering, is utterly fearless - many subjects who notice the camera show suspicion or outright hostility. The book isn't for the faint-hearted - there's blood, flesh, and more besides - but this befits an unflinching portrayal of hard-drinking culture. --Amateur Photographer

Alarming, shocking, utterly hilarious and guaranteed to vindicate those who think that Britain has become a nation of dissolute drunks --The Observer

These photos are good. Some are very, very good ... a study in the performativity of inebriated exuberance ... Gin Lane with fewer clothes, more kokes, and no proselytising. --New Welsh Review

Alarming, shocking, utterly hilarious and guaranteed to vindicate those who think that Britain has become a nation of dissolute drunks --The Observer

This presents a fascinating picture of night life in a major British city. One is impressed by the photographer's ability to capture so many candid moments in the clubbers' nights out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have! 19 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Got this book having followed Dakowicz on flickr for a while. He is one of the best young photographers out there and Cardiff After Dark is the best example. The book is absolutely amazing - it manages to do what is so difficult in times of constant exposure to imagery - sometimes it makes you laugh, sometimes cringe, sometimes think - it will never make you yawn. At times it is brash, while on the next page it can be very subtle. I love how Dakowicz uses street photography's method to tell real vivid stories - again, something which few street photographers can do. A brilliant photographer and a brilliant book. Highly recommended!

Probably the best photo-book of 2012. A consummate photographer, who has captured the highs and lows of an alcohol fuelled Saturday night out.
