Book Description

25 Mar 2011
This stunning book contains a wealth of delicious recipes that reflect the flavours and traditional dishes of the Gulf states. Little is known about this fascinating and ancient cuisine and "Cardamom and Lime" aims to provide readers with the inspiration to create these wonderful dishes. The book starts with a detailed introduction on the history of the Gulf, a glossary of ingredients, herbs and spices used in the cooking and information on major culinary influences. There then follow five chapters: Rice; Lamb, chicken and fish; Vegetables; Desserts; Teas and coffees. With recipes ranging from Aromatic Rice, Fragrant Lamb Pilaf, Kebabs, Potato Cakes and Baked Fish with Nut Stuffing to Milky Rice Pudding and Pomegranate and Guava Salad, there is plenty here to tempt the tastebuds. Throughout the book there are stunning photographs and feature spreads to give a flavour of life in the Gulf, making this a unique and eye-opening look at this wonderfully traditional cuisine.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 6 April 2010
By Marand TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was rather disappointed with this book. There are only about 40 recipes and, for me, there just wasn't anything really new or exciting. Each recipe comes with a picture of the finished dish which some people may find useful. The book is padded out with lots of photos of e.g. markets, shops, etc which did nothing for me as there wasn't enough narrative to make this one of those travel/food books that I can happily spend an evening leafing through without actually needing to cook. Perhaps I am spoilt (I have more than 350 cookery books) but I didn't feel that the book was either interesting or good value for money. I didn't return it but I haven't used it either. If I want to cook middle eastern food I invariably find myself using one of Claudia Roden's books or Arto der Haroutunian.

3.0 out of 5 stars ok but a bit basic 22 Mar 2012

To be honest I expected a few more distinct recipes. Its a nicely presented book but a rather ecletic mix of home cooking -average

5.0 out of 5 stars new ways of cooking 21 Mar 2011
Format:Hardcover
Have bought this book not knowing much about the cookings traditions of these regions, the book was well written, clear and easy to follow, by an obviously passionate person who cares about the food she is writing about, ingredients easy to get hold of, results sensational, well worth a look
