Product Description

Product Description

South Seas - Clear blue waters flow effortlessly around seemingly countless islands all connected by a sophisticated network of bridges. It is here that the busy people who inhabit this heavenly paradise frolic around to gather the gifts granted to them by nature. Fish from the sea, bananas from the islands' trees - the bridges are crowded with shell collectors showing off their latest find. From time to time, even merchant ships will dock at the island in search of cargo; the islander that supplies the merchants with the wares they seek is well rewarded for their trouble. The players take turns placing land tiles on the table. These tiles create Bridges, Islands, Sea Regions and Markets, on which the players may place their Islanders in order to collect the various Wares. At the end of each turn, the active player may choose to deliver Wares to a Ship in order to score points. Once all of the Land tiles have been placed or all the Ships have been supplied with Wares, the game is over and the player with the most points is crowned King of the South Seas.

Box Contains

73 x Land tiles
24 x Ship tokens
1 x Set of rules
19 x Fishing boat tokens
60 x wooden Ware tokens
20 x wooden Islanders

Z-Man seem to have been busy since taking over production of Carcassonne from Rio Grande. New sets and expansions seem to have been appearing regularly, which is good to see in a game that has been around many years now. We play as a family with the standard set + the river and Inns/Cathedrals expansion so far. The Carcassonne Winter Edition is a pretty variant of the basic game, but since the pieces don't really work well (visually) with the expansions we have stuck to the original game.

This South Seas variant is a stand alone game that uses rules somewhat similar to normal Carcassonne (so if you know that you will get this quickly) but adds a theme with warm beaches, gathering products and ships. Unlike "Winter" this game cant be used with normal Carcassonne expansions so is more limited in how you can grow with it. It seems to be a pretty worthy game in itself, and is certainly family friendly (ie less competitive) but this inability to combine with other sets or use the variety of existing expansions is a shame. Set up time is quick and play time is a very manageable 30 to 50 mins (depnding on player numbers and dithering)

In our view, this is a little less cut throat than "normal" Carcassonne - but the original offers more depth and potential. Having said that, if you don't plan to expand and/or like the theme this is certainly a good game worth considering. By all account Z-Man are planning to release more of these themed variants, so it will be interesting to see what they do next

We've not yet had a chance to play this game but we thoroughly enjoy family games of Carcassonne and offshoots and expect this to be similarly enjoyable.

South Seas (Arround the World) simplifies Carcassonne's tidius scoring mechanism! 24 Feb. 2014
By M. Zietlow - Published on

As with Agricola Big&small, Carcassonne franchise has simplified the scoring mechanism with the use of "Wares" (Animeeples).
Instead of moving your Meeple on a scoring track as points are accrued, you can purchase 1 Ship with the wares you acquire each turn to score.
Some may see South Seas as a MONEY GRAB but I assure you the game mechanics NEEDED this improved method of scoring desperately. I cant tell you how many times we forgot to move our Meeple up the scoring track for little 2 point road victories, or scored a farm incorrectly.

With 2 players, The Game plays out in approximately 1hr or less.

And for my iTunes playlist while we acquire our tropical wares:
1. Banana Boat (Day O)
2. Bob Marlie - Exodus
3. Nilson Harry - Lime in the Coconut
4. Arrow - HOT HOT HOT
5. Peter Tosh - Legalize it
6. Clay Walker - Live, Laugh, & Love
7. Byron Lee - Dance Hall Soca
8. Musical Youth - Pass the Dutchie
9. Jimmy Buffett - Margaritaville
10. Mr Vegas - Heads High
11. Cachaito Lopez - A Gozar el Tumbao
12. Irakere - Cuba Libre
13. Hans Zimmer - He's a Pirate.

Great Take on a Fantastic Series 6 Mar. 2014

This is a stand-alone game just like Hunters and Gatherers, not an expansion to the original Carcassonne as I thought it was. I still enjoyed it immensely. My daughter and I have played it twice since we purchased it and it follows in the same basic rules/constructs, but with its own slight twist. We really enjoyed the game. I am hoping they will release an expansion to this one that will allow us to mix this with the original Carcassonne. All you basically need are "beaches" land tiles to make it work together... :-)

Great family game 3 Sept. 2014

I haven't played Carcassonne (the original version), although I have seen it played in Tabletop. I bought this on recommendation from the nice people at the Dice Tower, because they said that is a more friendly game, easier to understand, and I have to say that I agree wholeheartedly. I played this with my mother and she had no difficulty whatsoever in understanding how to play. If you are looking for a nice family game, don't hesitate and buy this.

nice way to mix things up 5 July 2014
By Becky - Published on

Classic Carcassone is in a league of its own, but this version is pretty good. It has a few elements that play off the the original game dynamics quite well, but it doesn't engage my obsessive need to replay like the original does. However, it's a nice way to mix things up when variety is needed.

A fun stand-alone game if you are a Carcassonne fan! 28 Sept. 2014

We have been playing Carcassonne games for the past 10 years. We have almost all of the individual games and almost all of the expansions for the original Carcassonne. This is one of our very favorite stand-alone Carcassonne games. We enjoy the unique way that you keep score in this game. And it's simple enough that our 8 year old and 6 year old daughters like to play with us...they like the little wooden bananas, shells and fish :)
