Book Description

1 Mar 2011
Carbs & Cals & Protein & Fat is a visual guide to carbohydrate, protein, fat and calorie counting for weight loss, healthy eating and diabetes management. It contains over 1,400 photos of popular food and drink items, with the carbohydrate, calorie, protein and fat values clearly displayed above each photo.

The 17-page introduction to the book contains information about losing weight, healthy eating, calories, carbohydrates, protein and fat. The 264 pages of photographs are arranged into 17 colour-coded sections: Biscuits & Crackers, Bread, Breakfast, Cakes & Bakery Items, Desserts, Drinks, Eggs & Cheese, Fruit, Meals, Meal Accompaniments, Meat, Chicken & Fish, Potatoes, Rice, Pasta & Grains, Sauces & Spreads, Snacks & Confectionery, Take-away Food, and Vegetables & Pulses.

There are up to 6 different portion photos for each food, with their corresponding carbohydrate, calorie, protein and fat values displayed above each photo. This provides users with an easy comparison to the food on their plate and a helpful guide to the carbohydrate, calories, protein and fat they are consuming. The prepared/cooked weight is also shown below each photo.

Calorie counting and monitoring of fat intake are an important part of weight management and healthy eating, and this book is an invaluable support tool for anyone engaged in this process. It takes out the guesswork and time spent weighing food by showing the calorie and nutrient content in each food photo. This allows the user to make choices on how to reduce calories and fat intake by choosing a smaller portion or swapping a food item that is in calories for a healthier option.

PLEASE NOTE: The Carbs & Cals & Protein & Fat Pocket Counter (ISBN 9781908261007) is a great portable accompaniment to the Carbs & Cals & Protein & Fat book. With all the same food and drink items, but in just 1 or 2 portion sizes, it’s an extremely handy resource for when out and about.

Review

"Carbs & Cals & Protein & Fat has changed my whole way of eating. I am three stone down, from a size 22 to a 14-16 and sugar and cholesterol levels below borderline and normal! Forget all the slimming groups. With help from your practice nurse and this 'bible' you will be successful." "I have lost nearly 3kg so far and have only been using the book for 3 weeks." "Very good, useful book. Can't believe the calories in the fish and chip takeaway!!!!!" "I have lost nearly two stone, talking in "old money", in a little over two months." "Gauging the carbs in my meals has never been easier. I believe it is a must for diabetics and those on controlled diets." "I have lost 4.5 stones with the help of this book." "I was told this was a good book to buy to help with weight control; well, they were right - the portion control shown in detailed photographs is so much more helpful than calorie listings alone." "I have had diabetes for about 4 years and could not seem to get my diet right, but with this book it was so easy to get my portion sizes right and I have lost almost 2 pounds since Christmas." "This book is a really useful reminder that we generally make our portions far too big." "I love this book - so easy to follow and everything is plated up so you know what amounts you are eating. I definitely recommend this book for dieters or diabetics and people who want to follow a healthy diet." "Great, easy to use book. I use it to explain portion sizes to patients trying to lose weight and also to help patients with diabetes to understand carbs." --Amazon reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 18 Mar 2011
By LD
Format:Paperback
Being a) diabetic and b) trying to lose weight, I found this visual guide to be amazingly useful, after all they say one picture says a 1000 words and this illustrates that wonderfully! Eveyone I've shown it to agrees that is is an extremely useful diet tool. For example, say, you have had a meal out you can more easily gauge the damage done by comparing the portion you had with that in the book.. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant book 29 April 2011
Format:Paperback
I work in a GP surgery and one of my colleagues attended a course run by dieticians about helping diabetics with weight loss. This book was recommended as was its companion for diabetics. I bought it as since being over 40 I can no longer seem to lose the last half or 3/4 stone to get down to my ideal weight. The book is excellent - it shows the portion size of meals and how so many extra calories are consumed due to portions being too large. I have lost nearly 3Kg so far and have only been using the book for 3 weeks. I have since bought the Iphone app which means I can add the calories and carbs easily. Would highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential dietitian resource 14 Mar 2011
By Poppy
Format:Paperback
I'd previously purchased the Carbs and Cals only edition but with the added fat and protein values this resource is proving invaluabe during all my consultations. For me, where it scores is being able to highlight the effect of fat and carb portion sizes on both blood glucose and weight control - short and long term.

There is a huge range of foods, snacks, drinks and meals covering all tastes and cultures. I've yet to not find something I needed.

A fantastic resource for both health care professionals and the individuals we see in supporting weight loss and glycaemic control.

Rarely a day goes by without me using it :-)
