Book Description

29 Nov 2010
Carbs & Cals is a visual guide to carbohydrate and calorie counting. It contains over 1,200 photographs of popular food and drink items, clearly showing the amount of carbohydrate and calories in each photo. For the first time, carbohydrate and calorie counting has been turned into an easy-to-understand, practical, visual guide.

The 13-page introduction to the book explains the effect of carbohydrate on blood sugar levels and explores the amount of calories we need in our diet, giving practical tips on how to use the book for diabetes control and weight management.

The 217 pages of photographs are arranged into 15 colour-coded sections: Biscuits & Crackers; Bread; Breakfast; Cakes & Bakery Items; Desserts; Drinks; Fruit; Meals; Meal Accompaniments; Meat & Fish; Potatoes; Rice, Pasta & Grains; Snacks; Take-aways; and Vegetables & Pulses.

There are up to 6 different portion photos for each food (with their corresponding carbohydrate and calorie value displayed above each image). This provides an easy comparison to the food on your plate and a helpful guide to the carbohydrate and calories you are consuming. The prepared/cooked weight is also shown below each photo.

Carbohydrate counting is an important part of diabetes management, particularly for Type 1 diabetes. This book will provide an invaluable tool for anyone engaged in this process.

For people with Type 2 diabetes or those trying to lose weight, Carbs & Cals vastly simplifies the calorie counting process. It takes out the guesswork and time spent weighing food by showing you the calorie content in each food photograph. This allows you to make choices on how to reduce calories by choosing a smaller portion or swapping a high calorie snack for a healthier option.

This book is a fantastic help for all diabetics especially Type 1. Counting carbs can be so diffucult when trying to control your blood sugar as a diabetic. The visual pictures of the food and the portion sizes make it so much easier to ulimately calculate the right insulin dose to have with the food/carbs you eat.
And so gain better diabetic control.
A must for all adults. Children and their parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Book 30 April 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a brilliant book for anyone who needs to count their Carbs and Calories!...I am a Type 2 Diabetic, have been since 1991 and have never been taught how to count Carbohydrates although I am on Tablets and Insulin (Basal Bolus). I was on a Diabetes Forum and somebody wrote about being advised to get this book Carbs and Cals by Chris Cheyette and Yello Balolia..so I went to their website... [...] ordered one.
I am really glad I did.! the book is so easy to use, with pictures of plates of food ..in graduating portions showing you what a portion should look like and how many Carbs and Calories are in the portion size you choose to have. There is a lot of useful information as well.If you don't have Diabetes...it is very useful for losing weight..and the book is well worth while getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Handy Delight 18 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
Thank you Chris Cheyette. All the dietitians I know are envious that you have come up with this wonderful book. I use this everyday at work. It has been the most useful tool I have had as a diabetes specialist nurse. Looking back since I bought it, I have used in every discussion in appointments with people I see! Using the photographs to judge portion sizes (because you have a selection on each page) is extremely useful to try and work out carb: insulin ratio used at each meal. The photographs are of foods readily available here in the UK, although it would be a handy delight when on holiday abroad as well. People I have introduced to this book have found the rice and pasta pages very useful. Also the alcohol pages too. There is an iphone app available too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revelation! 11 Aug 2010
By plummy
Format:Paperback
I recently bought this book after visiting my diabetic clinic. What a [[ASIN:095644301X Carbs & Cals: A Visual Guide to Carbohydrate & Calorie Counting for People with Diabetes] revelation this turned out to be - after seeing the portion sizes and carbohydrate values in the book I realised I had been underestimating the amount of insulin I needed to give me stable blood sugar levels and that I needed to make alterations to my diet. I must say the calories are an eye-opener too! I have had type 1 diabetes since I was 12 (quite a few years ago now) but this book proves that there is always something new to discover and learn. If you have a meal out or a take-away it is difficult sometimes to guesstimate - this book takes a lot of the hard work away and makes life much easier ... I would recommend it to anyone - you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars DAFNE friendly 15 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Having recently completed a DAFNE course, relating to the self management of Type 1 diabetes, I was delighted to have the recommendation from a course tutor to purchase this book. It is a perfect partner to the simple guide provided on the course and should be considered a 'must' for anyone who wishes to take the DAFNE guidelines seriously.
The book combines carbs and cals guidelines with multi photos for most of the everyday foods and drinks and, used sensibly, reduces guesswork to a minimum. After 52 years as a Type 1 diabetic, I have been inspired by a simple, well edited book. Well worth the small outlay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carbs & Cals 25 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
My son has recently been diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic, and this book has been a godsend! We have used this book for calculating his carb intake for virtually every meal, and it has been so good that his school has bought one too. Although we use electronic scales at home, the pictures are really great for helping us make a realistic guess for carbs content in places where weighing food is impossible or impracticle, such as restaurants. It is easy to understand, and virtually all day-to-day foods are covered, as well as some of the more unusual fare. I would recommend this book to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvelous reference 7 Sep 2010
By Ali C
Format:Paperback
This is a really good reference book for anyone using an insulin pump or who wish to know the carbohydrate content in everyday dishes. Wonderfully, the book is full of food you would find regularly in the UK as opposed to a lot of the US diabetes books

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource book 19 May 2010
By Mummy TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have to agree with the other reviewers here.
Before my son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (aged 2) I had never worried about carb counting, so this book is incredibly useful. It has clear concise information and is well laid out. I use the collins carb counter book for anything that is not included here (though there isn't much that isn't). This book has become a very useful tool and I often to take it to playgroup as it helps take the guesswork out of what size portion he has had while there. I'm planning to get another copy for when he starts Nurery, or I might get the flashcards. There is also a phone app version.

BRILLIANT

UPDATED AUG 2011
Just a note, I have bought the new edition and though the same foods have been used, some of the carb (and Cal) values have been changed. Some are a little lower, some a litle higher. Some by only 1g of carb some by as much as 4g. Overall I don't expect this to make a huge difference to his carb intake and the old edition is still handy to have. I mention it as you may wish to give thought to updating your copy.

PS The poster set produced by Carbs and Cals are huge, you would need to have a lot of wall space to display. Better suited to an office or clinic than say a small nursery classroom. It does have a handy 10g snack comparison (which is what I was after) Publishers take note , that info on a handy flyer would be great.
