Product Description

Product Description

Carbeth is the hotly-tipped debut of a new new-folk outfit masterminded by protean drummer Alex Neilson, one of the UK's leading young improvisers. From the ashes of Scatter, a Glasgow-based collective which long anticipated the free-folk phenomenon, emerges a new song-based venture, Trembling Bells. Having served apprenticeships with some uniquely talented songwriters (Bonnie Prince Billy, Current 93, Alasdair Roberts, Baby Dee, Red Krayola, Six Organs of Admittance, Josephine Foster amongst them) Neilson seeks with Trembling Bells to reanimate the hidden, mythic landscapes of Yorkshire and Glasgow (in particular) via a love of canonical rock, Earlie Musik and traditional folk. Featuring the diverse musical talents of Medieval Music scholar and psychedelic siren, Lavinia Blackwall, Venusian bluesman, Ben Reynolds, Lucky Luke progenitor Simon Shaw, plus trombonist George Murray, and viola player Aby Vuillamy from Scatter and the Bill Wells Group. Hotly tipped by The Independent to 'pick up the nu-folk baton in 2009' Reviews confirmed in MOJO / Independent

5.0 out of 5 stars Future 'Lost Classic' Alert! 18 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD
I didn't notice much publicity or reaction around the release of 'Carbeth', but for me, this record blows away virtually everything else released in 2009. The influence of late 1960s folk/rock luminaries Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band is discernible (and Joe Boyd has given the Bells his seal of approval) but this isn't a group of copycat poseurs. There's a real sense of musical exploration in the songwriting and arrangements. The strong, soaring vocals from Lavinia Blackwall contrast nicely with the more ragged tones of drummer/bandleader Alex Nielson. The material ranges from the baroque-psych opener 'I Listed All Of The Velvet Lessons' to lovelorn ballad 'Summer's Waning' but there's never a dull moment. The a cappella closer 'Seven Years A Teardrop' confirms that the Trembling Bells are in a field of their own. This record certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I'd drink a vat of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reimagining Sixties folk 21 Jan 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this on the strength of a recommendation in Mojo by Paul Weller. I am so glad I did. I'm a big fan of the primary influences on this band--Fairport Convention and The Incredible String Band. They channel a lot of both, and there are hints of The Band as well. For me this is the best band I've come across since Fleet Foxes, another group who wear their influences on their lapels. And like them, they have the chops to back it up--great tunes, fantastic loose playing, interesting instrumentation and arrangements, out there vocals, and a cohesive sense of knowing what they're about. The more I listen to this, the more it grows on me. If you like King Creosote, The Unthanks or Espers I think you will enjoy this--it's got a nice touch of eerieness and and almost fey (in the best sense of the word) quality that both charms and stays with you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kooky but wonderful music 14 Oct 2011
By P. Monk
Format:MP3 Download|Amazon Verified Purchase
You will either love the Trembling Bells or hate them. The music is folk-based but even on this early album shows signs of the eclecticism to come from this band. The subject matter of the songs is very personal and the vocal styles of the two main singers are highly contrasting - Lavinia's soaring, trained soprano vs Alex's 'honest' efforts - make for an emotional mix that would not be to everyone's taste. When it works, it works very well, particularly on 'Seven Years a Teardrop' but can be a distraction elsewhere. I note that Alex's singing is less prominent on later albums...
