This EP was released ahead of the 2010 Time Machine tour of the Americas and is a great taster of what is in store for the forthcoming Clockwork Angels album due out in spring 2011. You get two stonking new tracks - Caravan and BU2B plus some booklet imagery. Mine was a bargain as I got the MP3 download free from Amazon as part of a promotional credit but its worth paying for. Rush continue to march on like a relentless wall of inventiveness. After over 35yrs in the business its no wonder they are flawless musicians ... but quite how they keep their inspiration and motivation to create new music is a mystery. The new album will sell by the bucket load, Rush have a massive worldwide following and many bands could be forgiven for resting on their laurels and cashing in on the guarantee of epic sales figures ... but Rush are still so committed to ensuring their recording are of the highest technical and artistic quality. If this short EP is any sort of indication ...Clockwork Angels is going to be a damn fine album and I for one can't wait for its release.

Update Feb 2011: Alex Lifeson announced on Planet Rock that the new album is now due out early 2012

Update 23rd May 2011: Just been to see Rush on their Time Machine tour at LG Arena .... the two tracks on this EP were awesome live .... this new album can't come quick enough

Sounds like they have. 'Caravan' is juggernaut starting with ominous opening into a pretty big sounding riff, the tempo picks up with some odd time signature change (or is syncopation?), and a very catchy chorus. There is even a funky break with some Primus-esque sounding bass and atonal guitar solo towards the end. It's pretty obvious they enjoyed playing this one! 'BU2B' alternates between a massively heavy riff, and some subtler gothic sounding guitar work. There is judicious use of keyboards in this song as in 'Caravan'. This is not as ambitious a track as 'Caravan' but is more straight forward and maybe more appealing to some. Again lots of energy in this song.

The only thing wrong with this is that we have to wait til 2011 for the album!

Very impressed with these two new tracks from Rush. If the rest of the album turns out like this it should be well worth the wait. I'm just a little mystified by the fact that Caravan was chosen as the A-side and is presumably getting all the airplay (although I doubt you'll be hearing it much on UK radio anyway). BU2B is a much stronger track - in my humble opinion.

Rush doing what Rush do shock horror.
Sorry just a quick note - from the clips I've heard I have difficulty in reconcilling the music to the vitriol in some of these reviews. People change as do tastes. Read more

Do you like random abstract?
Time for Rush to hang up their instruments?
Devoid of anything tuneful, badly arranged and Geddy's vocal melodies are horrendous. They don't fit the music.
