AA camping guide 20 Aug 2010
By Eliza
Format:Paperback
There are many campsites mentioned in this guide as well as useful information about speed limits, general rules of the roads etc throughout Europe. The maps that help you identify where to find a site are relatively easy to use and you get a pretty good idea before arrival of how much a site will charge. There are some informative "personal" adverts from the Caravan and Camping Club. However, a good many aspects one would normally expect are not here. The biggest omission is some sort of star rating format; you have very little idea of what to really expect. Yes, the guide tells you there is a shop on the site, but that can cover anything from a near supermarket to a shelf with a few tuna cans. There is no clue as to whether the toilets will be clean, complete (ie no broken seats), "continental" (ie a hole in the floor) etc. Instructions on how to get there are given but with huge variation in the depth of detail. One suspects an assumption that you have a sat nav, but we didn't, and had not planned where we would be each day, so no chance of previous research. In the end we found we ended up at more reliable sites (when in France) if we referred to the campsite sign on our Michelin road map.France 2010 NATIONAL map 721 (Michelin National Maps). The guide probably acts best as an adjunct to other guides and information and is useful in that it covers the whole of Europe.

This is really just a yellow pages of campsites. I found it hard to navigate a text only book with no guide to where the areas it listed sites really were - a map showing the areas of a country would be helpful. I borrowed Alan Rogers guide to Italy and this was in a different league - I will buy that next time as it has maps, area guides and a sense of someone actually having been there to write a review. My copy of the AA guide will shortly be in the Amazon marketplace!

I bought this guide for a camping trip around Europe and it was useful although not always accurate and quite difficult to use.

Although the information is there if you spend long enough looking for it, the book is very badly organised. The maps showing the campsite locations are not very accurate and are not easy to use, e.g. they show where the different campsites are but don't tell you where in the book you can find the information about each campsite, or even what section of the book.

The book is structured into regions of each country, which is quite confusing as it's not always obvious which region you want. Some campsites seemed to be in the wrong region, e.g. I found a campsite in the region 'South West France' which was actually further east than a campsite in the 'South East France' section! I came across several examples of incorrect information too.

Overall, this is quite a useful guide and lists a large number of campsites, although not all of them. I'd estimate that for every campsite I found from the book, I drove past another 3 that weren't featured. The information about each campsite is minimal, e.g. a sentence describing it very briefly, and the address information is not always good enough to find the campsite on either a map or using the sat nav. The symbols about each campsite are useful to find information about the campsite's facilities, price etc. It's just frustrating that the authors didn't bother making it easier to use.

Pretty useless
No maps overview or other wise. I want to decide where I want to go ( or go there ) and then look up what camp sites are in the area. Read more

Poorly researched, hopeless maps
This guide covers only a small fraction of available campsites, it is particularly lacking in the many municipal campsites you can still find in France. Read more

AA Camping & caravanning 2011
I bought the Alan Roger's guide, which in the past has been the bible of camping & caravanning in Europe, and I was very dissappointed. It is a pale shadow of what it used to be. Read more

DO NOT BUY!
This is a perfect example of how not to write a camping guide book. The book has no clear structure or key that might allow you to find camping sights in specific places. Read more

Could be better
From our experience in France and Spain I can say that unfortunatelly, the guide could be better if it gave more accurate info. No one likes to arrive at a camping site, e.g. Read more
