Product Description

Product Description

An anthology of Gaelic verse with English translation, and introductions to the poetry and its themes. This book covers the main types and topics of poetry produced in Gaelic during the 19th century. Ten primary themes are involved - homeland, clearances, emigration, transport, panegyric, love, war, humour, moral exhortation and religious experience. The anthology shows how Gaelic poets reacted to the many changes which were taking place in both their native Highland communities and their adopted communities in the Lowlands and beyond. It also offers a look at the literary creativity of the 19th century, and aims to show a greater range of poetic skills and approaches than has been previously recognized. As the poets respond to the "wilds of the world", their output covers elegies on death to songs of humour, from nostalgia for a lost world to the joy of a new-found religious faith.

very well written 9 Mar 2012

There are Gaelic poetry readers out there who won't look at the nineteenth century. People say it is nothing on the epic poetry of the earlier bardic tradition in which praise of a chieftan was common. However the nineteenth century was a time of change. The British Empire had risen and was well underway (along with the industrial revolution) and large scale emigration from the Highlands was in occurance. The reason for this emigration? Hard economic times, famine and a dislike for the change. The poetry of the time reflects this. In my view, if you want Gaelic poetry that is sad, humourous, sarcastic - then the best place to look is this period of time. Donald Meek is a credit to the Gaelic community. His work has largely saved poetry that others simply did not care about. The translations are accurate, and background information is given when required. It is with this in mind that I have given this product 5*.
